I've heard that you can get a lot of mileage by publishing articles to article sites on the Net
I write a few articles for magazines and such. I've been told that I can get some of these sites to link back to mine by sending in my articles. How does this work exactly?

Yup. Great plan actually. There are a number of really high page rank sites on the Internet where you can republish your articles. You include a bio about you and link back to your website. Readers normally rate the article and if it is popular it gets a lot of play and can get quite a bit of traffic. Here's a short list with Page Ranks shown.
