Classic Pictures (Pictures from Bob Baker)
Hi Everyone,
Awhile back, BoB Baker and I had talked about adding some older pictures to the ARRC website. Bob found some great old slides.
Thank you Bob for the pictures! Thanks go out to my brother (Steve) too! Steve transferred the pictures from slides to digital images. Bob also helped to provide background information on each of the slides. Thanks again Bob!
As always, comments are welcomed. When making comments please add, in your email, the picture number of the image that you are commenting on.
More pictures to follow.
Best Regards,

Hand launch! The only way back then. Bob's first airplane. Single channel radio - rudder only!

Great Form Bob! Single channel pulse radio - rudder only! (early 1964)

The Start of Bob's Aircraft Fleet (1962)
(Picture 3.1)
This is what the runway used to look like. (back in the 70's) Imagine our planes today hitting one of these grass clumps! Over the years, the guys, have really made a lot of improvements to the field, even putting in drainage pipes!
(Picture 4.1)
Bob's 4 Channel Cherokee a Vince Kreibel kit (1967)
(Picture 5.1)
Bob's Cherokee again. The Cherokee was flown by a reed system. Flying was much more dificult back then because the radio signals were pulse signals not proportional radio signals. (You would have to bump a control surface one direction and it would come back to neutral. A full circle would be made by bumping the rudder many times to achieve the full 360 degree change of flight.)
(Picture 6.1)
Andrews Sportsmaster - Great airplane of the Day! Bob's 1st plane with proportional controls. (1966)
(Picture 7.1)
Five of the Original Six Altoona R/C Club Members (1965) - Ray Yoke, Norm Van Clive, Jim Knox, Joe Lamont, and Bob Baker (from left to right) - Ken Brubaker not in the Picture. Bob said back then - club dues were 25 cents a week!
(Picture 8.1)
Andrew's Aeromaster (1970's) with Bob's dog Sandy. Possibly Bob's favorite plane of all time. This is the plane that Bob learned how to fly inverted close to the ground and do "snaps" on takeoff.

R/C Show (1960's)

Joe Lamont's Twin with Jack Baker, Joe and Ken Brubaker (from left to right)

Ready to Go!
(Picture 12.1)
Bob Baker's 28 lb Art Chester's Jeep - Bob's first gas engine airplane. Powered with Kioritz gas engine. Bob said that one time he flew it thru the top of a tree and it didn't even slow the plane down. Bob eventually sold it to a gentleman from the Johnstown club. Also in the picture is Bob's beautiful F-16 Falcon!
(Picture 13.1)
Guy Forshey's Dauntless at a Mall Show. This model appeared in the August 1983 issue of R/C Scale Modeler. It has a wingspan of 70 inches and a webra 90 size engine for power. I remember seeing this model as a kid. All I can say is amazing! Awesome museum quality scale model!
(Picture 14.1)
Bob Baker's Nieuport at a show. Bob said that he added 13 oz of weight to the nose, and it was still tail heavy! (Having to add a lot of nose weight is very common to short nose airplanes.)
(Picture 15.1)
The Nieuport on the tarmac. (Actually on the original AARC runway - dust control added to the runway.) The Nieuport was taken to Toledo by Josh Plunket and sold to the editor of Model Airplane News magazine, Art Shroeder (click here to see his bio).
