I would be honored to again be the DJ and announcer for the big event. AMEC has made another investment on announcing equipment for the club and we should use it to its fullest extent.
I'll bring the sound tracks to spice things up a bit.... and of course the polar bear club will be joining us.

2007 A.M.E.C. Lake George Historic Ice Races

We are really pleased to announce that former A.M.E.C. racer from the 1960's, Sam Patterson from Saquoit, NY will be joining us this year. Sam had every intention of running his Saab 96 with us at our inagural event last winter, but couldn't get to the event due to the snow storm.

This is Sam's V-4 powered 96 and he is currently repainting it and getting it ready for action.

Image

Sam fills us in on the details:

1972 Saab 96

This car sustained a towing mishap on the way to last year's Historics caving in the rearend & ripping off the bumper. After a little hydraulic jacking at T.I.R.(Claude's Tired Iron Repair), a new/old fender and some hammer work, it's almost ready for paint.

I'll be running 185/65-15 Hakkapeliitta's on Saab alloys and may license the car instead of towing it up this year.

Sam

Sam we are glad to hear the car is fixed and will be racing with us this year. Please send another pic when you've got it ready!

Mike

Great early ice racing pics and stories from Sam Patterson!

Image

1958 TRIUMPH TR3
Owner-driver- Sam Patterson 1965 at Lake George.

Notice the Saab 93's in the background, one of which has been converted into a rag top! The blue car behind mine is a Sunbeam Alpine.

The TR ran on high milage Michelin X-stops; the first radials. I noticed that some of the racers from Maine siped ther tires then draped them with rags that had been soaked in laquer thinner to soften the rubber compound.

Image

Sam's 1963 Volkswagen 1200...1967, Lake George.

This car was easier to handle on the ice than the TR because it had predictable oversteer. The rear tires were a recapped Firestone Town & Country pattern with walnut shells embedded in the compound. This car had the optional gas heater that was handy for keeping warm and a dune buggy handbrake that allowed you to brake each rear wheel independently.

Sam this is great stuff!

Thank You!

Sam does have a computer now!!! All I have to do is get him to resgister on the message board!!
More stories...you guys would love the stories...he's got lots of them...as he was ice racing during the infant years of AMEC. Sam Grew up in Glens Falls so was one of the Car nuts that did the Inaugural Ice racing years.

Holy Cow,

I just looked on the Grassroots Motorsport message boards and my original Historic Ice Racing thread there now has over 11,300 views!

I started a new one for our 2007 event today.

Mark Long will field the first VW in Historic ice racing.........

Image

Mike,

I have been working on my 1962 VW Baja Bug over the summer and in the back of my mind I have been thinking about the historic races.

I really enjoy driving my FWD Avenger in the SL class, but I really think it would be a blast to drive a light RWD, rear engined bug on the ice.

I just picked up a set of 205/65 15 WS-50 Blizzaks with only 500 miles on them and steel rims for 51 bucks on Ebay. emoticon But for the Historic Ice races I think it would be in the spirit to make up a set of screw tires for the race. I am going to have to check the archives on tips on how to make those.

Wow, I have alot to do.

Mark Long

Still buzzing about the great weekend they had this past February at the inaugural Historic Ice Races, father and son team of Daniel and Richard Dobbins are rolling up their sleeves to improve the performance of their '62 Studebaker Lark. Out comes the standard open differential and in goes a freshly prepared Dana 44 limited slip unit, known in Studebaker jargon as a "Twin Traction" differential.

Image

Dan also rebuilt the entire brake system on the car plus much more. He has a great sense of humor as evidenced by this quote in a recent email exchange:

"Mike, I suggest you do not publicize the installation of the TT differential in the Ice Racing Lark, # 415. The other historic class racers will quake in their boots out of sheer fear when they learn what we have done. And rightly so." emoticon

I must commend the Dobbins' for their enthusiasm and for getting the work done properly in the "off" season.

I forgot to mention that the Dobbins' will be fielding two Studebakers at the 2007 event! In addition to their awesome '62 Lark, they will also be bringing out their '64 Hawk as well. That's the high performance 4 bbl. version!

On another note, I would like to add that A.M.E.C. V.P. John Subik will be running his former #35 E class early Honda Civic in the Historic races this winter. John told me that when he bought this car years ago, it came with a pile of home built screwed tires from the old days. In fact, John said he's got too many and will sell some. So, if you'd like more traction for the Historic races this year and your car uses 13" tires, I would give him a call at 518-762-8230. emoticon

Anyone know who this was?

Image Joe Corbett photo

Dave Burnham recently received a bunch of black and white pictures of early ice racing. Being that I used to work for Nemith Motors in Latham NY, I took this picture over there and showed it to Walter, the General Manager there. Walter was working at Nemith in the sixties and vaguely remembers the car. He said the driver very likely was Roly Heacox, and that Roly likely "borrowed" this MG from the Nemith Imports used car lot without the boss knowing it.

Can anyone confirm that this was Roly climbing out of this car?
