Its a very funny thing about SAAB people but they are a breed all on thier own. They are very good at finding and pulling cars out of the wood work. I know i have a disease when i see a good saab or hear about one i have to go and check it out. lol

Historic Ice Racing tires

One unique challenge that Historic car owners have these days is finding the original tall skinny sized tires for them. Last season some racers like Rik Rydant found a source on ebay for these elusive sizes. Rik scored a set of period correct 6.85-15 recapped winter tires on Ebay for his Historic class Saab 96.
Image

They were recapped snow tires and were only $69 a pair and last year. There were plenty more at the time if you wanted them. They came from South Carolina of all places.

I studded them up for him with oversize #15 studs and they worked out perfectly for the Historic races, where the sky is the limit for stud length for street studded tires.

Image

This year however, there seems to be no matched pairs of these left. It seems that the sand racers and Dune Buggy crowd like them for use in the dirt and such. One of this seller's ads actually lists them as good demo derby tires! I guess they're so narrow that you stand a better chance of them not rubbing on the crunched fenders I guess.

In any case HERE'S one of the seller's ads to see what he's got left.

Finally, an Italian joins the Mix!

Our good friend Casey Creamer has expressed interest in bringing out his Alfa Romeo for this year's Historic ice racing festivities.

Image

The car will go to Kurt Thiel's for some repairs this week. Casey is seeking a set of screw tires for it and all I know right now is that the car uses 14" wheels. I have had several people tell me that they still have these tires around and would make them available to the Historic racers for the weekend. Anyone have a set of 14's to sell/lend to Casey?

I will find out the exact bolt pattern and such and update.

The Saab community takes good care of their own!

Quote "Mike said the car is missing a rear window and needs all the brakes done."

UPDATE: Claude's son Jimmy Hutchings has offered to donate a rare 93f rear window and gasket to Mike's Historic race effort!

Mike was really surprised and appreciative.

Nice going Jimmy!

A.M.E.C. Historic Ice Races becomes 2007 February Calendar Page!
Our local paper, The Leader-Herald put A.M.E.C. in on their calendar for the month of February 2007.
The caption reads:
The Leader Herald/Bill Trojan.
This race driver uses an umbrella to keep the snow off him in his old time car during the races on Caroga Lake on Feb. 25, 2006.
As you can see its Steve Garrett's #23 Bugeye Sprite and Mike Kamm and it may be **** Veeder as co-pilot.

See You on the Ice! Stan Waddle(33 SL)

Hey thanks for letting us know Stan!

That's awesome and I didn't remember Steve using an umbrella on the grid. I believe it was Ed Tucker riding along with Steve during the first race.

I have to commend the Historic class drivers, as they were definately into the spirit of things regardless of what the weather threw at us. What a hoot! emoticon

If any of you guys in the Johnstown area could save me a copy of that paper I would like to put on in the AMEC archives.
Thanks,
Dave Burnham

Back in the summer, Casey Creamer forwarded me this picture of Mike "Fuzzy" Space's new toy that was procured for our 2007 Historic races. This picture appeared in the Classic Motorsport's "Ran when Parked" gallery.

Image

These cars are classics with well documented rally histories and this one will be an excellent addition to the class.

The good news is that Mike says he is making great progress with it and plans to run it with us in the Historic races.

Here's the latest from Mike:

"Hey all, I've been working on my 544, got the heater and the gas gauge working, waiting for the carbs to get back from Joe Curto for new shafts.

Now I have to figure out my tires. I have two pairs of 155/15 radial snows,(two each of different brands) that are studdable. I will mount them on my spare wheels and take them down and have them studded at the tire shop.

I still have a bunch of brand new tires I'm looking to sell, including six 5.60 x 15 bias plys. Is anyone interested in these? Also two 185/15 radial snows. No reasonable offer refused, we can figure out delivery."

Mike,

If you're only planning to use those studded tires for this race [and not on the street] have your shop put in longer studs. I would say at least #15's, like the ones I put into Rik Rydant's tires [pictured a few posts above]. Remember, there's no limit on stud lengths for our historic class. Go for it baby! emoticon

Here's a great story of dedication to Historic Ice racing. Pennsylvania's Steve Garret enjoyed racing at our inaugural event very much last year in his 1960 Austin Healey Sprite. However this year's event conflicted with a vacation to the Caribbean! Anyone you know would probably just say "oh well" and leave it at that right?

Not Steve! He went to the trouble of rescheduling his vacation and plans to be there this winter again with his beautiful Austin Healy again in '07! Image

John Subik and I are planning to set him up with a set of home built screw tires to run this year. John, did you get out to the barn yet and find them? emoticon
