1960 Saab 93f being brought back to life....

These great progress pictures come courtesy of Mike Grieco. As you can see, he and his father dove in head first and are going full steam on the project.

ImageMike's Dad is still turning wrenches at 81 years old. emoticon

In Mike's words:

"Tis was the week before Christmas and we are working late into the night, to finish our ice racer, oh what a sight!"

Image
The car in the backround is a 67 2-stroke 96 that Mike restored.

"Thanks for the contact with Jim Hutchings for my rear window. He also gave me a brake part source not far in N.J. We hope to see ya in Lake George Mike!"

Re: 2007 A.M.E.C. Historic Ice Races! February 24th and 25th

I spoke with Sam Patterson on the phone today and asked him how his Saab 96 is coming along. He said he just finished replacing the steering rack and having the leaky fuel tank repaired. He also is sanding the car down right now and finishing the body work. He will send some pics along shortly.

We talked about tires and how the skinny 15" tires are getting harder to find for these early cars today. But Sam found a great source for the 165R15's that these cars use, they're studdable and they're cheap! Take a look at the Hankook Zovac 401's seen HERE. In the three tire size locator boxes, type in "165" then "N/A" and "15" inch.

Image

This isn't the 165R15 size pictured, but they can be special ordered in that size. At only $38.60 each, get them while you can!

I am wishing for more Japanese cars...

My thoughts about why there are so few Japanese cars running in Historic races is because they really didn't get a stronghold in the US market until the mid 70's. So for instance, you're not going to have early 60's examples around like you do with Saabs and Volvos, and the English cars.

A.M.E.C. did have Datsuns and Subarus running in the 70's and Randy Koehler's Suby won a D class championship years ago.

I have been poking around on the Ultimate Subaru message board in their Historic forum.

Image

There are people with these cars but they have never heard of ice racing. Anyone know of someone with an early Suby, Datsun, Totota, Mazda, etc? They're still don't bring big money. The one pictured above was on ebay recently and was only bid up to $1275. It did not meet the reserve. Auction is HERE.

When I first started racing in 82' there were a lot of those Subarus running one unbeatable guy was Allen Lendrum he had a really fast car that looked just like the Subaru in the photo. It had a big 48IDA Weber carb mounted in the middle on a home made intake manifold. Allen Lendrum and Rich Carl in a V4 Saab had some legendary ice racing battles in NYSIRA before they quit racing.

I can see why the Suby's would handle so well. Just like the new one's, their compact, lightweight boxer engine gives them a very low center of gravity. I would love to see some pics of Kenny's home made intake and 48 IDA weber!

Re: Speaking of Historic Saabs,

Wow, that was my old SCCA B Sedan. Sold it to Willy in 1979! I towed it up from Florida with another Saab 96 V4. I'll be running my current race Saab 96 "34 later". Currently a low priority but I'm getting inspired...

Eric,
Great to hear from you. I had to laugh when you said "low priority". It sounds like this year's Historic race weekend game plan will be the same as it was last winter. You waited until the last minute to get the car ready, pulled an all nighter the night before, and finished installing the engine about an hour before you left the house. And we're glad you did, even though it meant showing up with 10 year old gas in your tank! But I have to applaude you at the same time, because with all of the problems you had to solve working out there on the ice, you got her running good by Sunday, and the only expression I saw on your face all weekend was a smile. emoticon

I have been busy organizing this event and have sent my Historic email list several detailed updates already, including yesterday's announcement of the opening of event registration. If you would like to be added to the list and receive up to the minute info for this event, simply send an email to mkamm at icerace dot com.

Online registration form is HERE.

Registration is now open and all are encouraged to sign up for this event. You can print them out, bring them with you, and present them to me on the ice on Friday, or at Saturday morning's regular race registration in the Mt. Prospect Diner [next door to the Holiday Inn host hotel]. There is no need to send any money now, but please email me or call me at (518) 674-0520 and tell me your coming. I want to keep a current log of entries for this event on our message board. I also need to know what car number you will use. And if you can, please email me a digital picture or two with a little info about your car.

Thanks,

Michael Kamm
Historic Ice Race Coordinator

Re: 2007 A.M.E.C. Historic Ice Races! February 24th and 25th

I'd like to welcome Tom Cox to our Historic ice racing event driver's roster. Tom found out about our event through Bruce Turk's Vintage Saab Club of North America.

Tom will tow his blue 1970 Saab 96 all the way from Woodstock, Maryland to compete in our one of a kind vintage racing event. He will run in the Street Stud class with Rik, Brian, Ian, Theodore, and Richard in their Volvos, Saabs, Porsche and Studebaker. Perhaps I can get Tom to send me a picture of his Saab. Thanks for sending me your event registration and we're all looking forward to meeting you Tom! emoticon

Re: 2007 A.M.E.C. Historic Ice Races! February 24th and 25th

Has anyone noticed how many Historic racers are stepping it up for 2007? Look at the roster located two posts back. I organized the entry list by class and look how many more cars will be running screw tires this year. These guys only race one weekend a year so they want to go the Full Monte!

PA's Steve Garret just finished up his first pair and is working on the second pair as we speak. Steve built these tires from the directions I outlined in the article I wrote in THIS thread.

Image
Screws inserted from the inside out.

Image

He found a used set of 13" snow tires and these look to be good candidates because of their blocky tread and simply because the rubber has hardened over the years and will now hold the screws much better. Due to these not being full tread tires, Steve used shorter 1" #12 sheet metal screws. Here's how they look before they are trimmed to the club spec of 3/16ths of an inch.

Image

The finished product. emoticon
Image

Steve said they took about four hours each, just like we said it would. emoticon

He also said that the most arduous part of the job was grinding the rubber inner flaps to a feather edge. He got them for free from a pile of used inner tire flaps at a local farm implement supply store.

Steve's hotted up 1960 Austin Healy Sprite will be running with the big dogs this year. emoticon
