I wonder if the Gilded Otter is anything like the Black Frog. emoticon

There is only one Black Frog, nothing can compare emoticon

Gilded Otter is good food, nice place, make their own beer on the premises, pretty cool to check out. Try the Bratwurst, my personal favorite there. Not cheap, but not expensive either.

Place is packed with college kids at night, I would suggest getting there mid to late afternoon if you want to relax and hang out there for a while.

Ellenville Hill Climb Revisit and Vintage car Tour June 9th, 2007

This just keeps getting better....

I spoke with RiK Rydant tonight and a friend of his who writes for a local newspaper is interested in going along and covering this tour/event for an article. This is the same writer that did the piece on our Historic ice races last winter.

Also, Theodore Goneos will be joining us in his Porsche 911. A friend I work with has also expressed interest in bringing his Pinninfarina Spider. I suppose there will be quite a few more come out of the woodwork as we get nearer to the 9th.

By the way just in case, Sunday June 10th is the rain date. emoticon

Re: Historical - Ellenville Hill Climb

I've been working real hard getting the B210 ready for this weekend's excursion. The biggest problem was that twin side draft carbs on a left hand drive Datsun leave no room for the brake master cylinder. I needed to move it over and that isn't so easy to do. That's why I've been dragging my feet getting this car on the road for years. I finally made it a priority to get it done, no more excuses. I needed to move the master at least 2 1/2" to the left. I started measuring and got lucky. My SE-R parts car's clutch pedal was exactly what I needed! I still needed to re-engineer the pedal box, and here is a picture of the result.

Image
The original is on the left. This was more than just changing the pedal. Notice that the mounting point had to be altered as well.

Here' a picture that illustrates the offset made .....

Image
In addition to the pedal relocation, the vacuum booster had to be removed.
Also, the factory master cylinder was too long and wouldn't fit behind the strut tower. My research revealed that a rebuilt master from an '86 Sentra would do the trick and shared the same 3/4" bore size as the original.

Image
With the brake system complete, I am now moving along on other things the car needs. Here the new front Euro-bumper [sourced from England] is installed. I'm waiting for the new air cleaners to get here this week and the hood will go on last. I'm finishing up the interior and am trying to fit a set of Suzuki Swift GTi seats in this week as well.

Re: Historical - Ellenville Hill Climb

I just realized that this weekend is also the date of one of the most historic hill climbs of all time... the Mount Equinox Annual Hill Climb, near Manchester, Vermont. Did you know that it is the longest paved hill climb in the world, as well as the longest privately owned paved toll road in the USA (5.2 miles)? It's elevation increase is 3,235 ft. Among hill climbs on this continent only Pikes Peak predates Mount Equinox.

Luckily, this is a two day event, so I will likey go up and see it the day after our jaunt in the Catskills on Saturday. Anyone else want to take a ride on Sunday? emoticon

I usually swing by and check it out for a while. Me Chris and Tim are all about 10 mins away. I used to get a season pass, it was only $35. Frequently I'd try to be the first one up in the morning, I'd check out the hill to make sure nobody was up there, come back down then do some "practice" on the second run.

Mike,
That is one sweet looking Datsun.
How big are those carbs? What other modifications are done to that engine?

Thanks Mark,

The orignal engine was an A14 at 1397 cc's. I added an A15 crank and bored it 3mm over. It is now 1608 cc's. It's got [79mm] Subaru Justy pistons connected to the Datsun rods via custom bronze bushings. There is a modestly sized Crane cam and matching valvesprings in it. I ported the head and Redline [from Australia] intake together. The carbs are 40mm Dellortos. There is also a header on it connected to a hand built mandrel bent exhaust system.

So it's a Japanese car, with British bumpers, wearing an Austrailan intake maifold, Italian carburetors, and some good old Yankee engineering to make it all fit together.

Bonus! Commemorative Historical - Ellenville Hill Climb T-shirts

Image

More great news for this Saturday!

This just in from our good friend RiK Rydant:

Hello Mike,
Attached is a photo of the new vintage Ellenvile Hill Climb Teeshirt. The design is based on a copy of an original poster that Bruce Turk sent to you and you posted earlier in this thread. My partner in the Teeshirt world redrew it for me and after adjusting the lettering and spacing so it would make an attractive teeshirt design, we printed it on a Ringer Tee with dark blue ink matching the sleeve and neck colors of the ringer tee to make it even more appealing. Everyone bringing a car for the tour this Saturday will receive a complimentary "Vintage" Ellenville Hill Climb teeshirt for participating in the tour and revisit to the Ellenville Hill Climb location. See you all on Saturday, June 9 at North Marbletown Farm in Kingston, NY on 2700 Route 209 at 10:00. Coffee and donuts will be waiting for you.

RiK,

You're the Best! Image

Re: Historical - Ellenville Hill Climb

What a great day ! five historic cars showed at Rik,s farm. Four went on the tour of the area. I road with Mike Kamm in his restored Datsun. I ran flawlessly.
The tour took us on some great driving roads up and down the mountains and the scenery was fantastic.
The tour of the Mt. Cathalia Hillclimb was intersting, with Bruce tirk and Rik filling in a lot of information. It was very nostalgic for me. Kind of sad, seeing the condition of the site today.
Anyway I had a great time. We had lunch at the "Mud Puddle", then we had ice cream and then ****tails, then back to Rik's farm where we tokk a tour of his barn and he showed us his many projects.
I took a lot of pictures which I will have at Mondays meeting. Mike took videos too.
           **** V.
