Hershey Vintage Hillclimb May 3-4, 2008

I sent a note out to my Historic racers list this morning and let everyone know about this event. Here is a copy of that message:

I would like to invite all of you to join VSCNA President Bruce Turk and I in running with the Susquehanna Valley Vintage Sports Car Club in their 2008 Hershey Vintage Hillclimb and Motor Show. This event is on May 3rd and 4th with early tech inspection available on Friday night May 2nd.

Great News: The historic group eligibility requirements received a HUGE makeover for 08. Due in part to VSCNA member Marc Fails hard work with the events rules committee, things like a roll bar, fire proof suit, and 5-point harnesses are no longer necessary to participate as a novice. More info here: http://www.svvscc.org/newpages/new_hvh_page.htm . In addition to the exhibition runs on the Hillclimb Course each day, and Sunday's Motor Show, numerous vendors and exhibitors will be located around the event sites. As the Chevrolet Corvette is their 2008 featured marque, they will also have a Corvette Corral and other preferred parking areas for vintage (and not-so-vintage) sports cars each day. There are some video clips of the event here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7539677723711324141.

Is there anyone else on this list who might consider joining Bruce and I? We certainly hope so. How about that lovely little white Bugeye Sprite from Boothwyn, PA? What do you say Steve? ;-)

Regards,

Responce has been better than I would have thought. Dave Burnham's Maserati BiTurbo is eligible [at least 20 years old] and he is considering it. Historic Ice Racer Steve Garrett and his '60 Austin Healy Sprite is also considering it at this point.

In the confirmed category are CNYIRA standouts Karl Hughes [returning for his fourth time with his '73 BMW 2002 and the reigning "King of the Hill", Rex Franklin will be returning with his 1962 MG Midget. MG was the featured marque last year, so Rex's FTD was well received, even if his Midget isn't quite "original". This is in addition to Bruce Turk and his '61 Saab 96 Rallye car and lastly myself in my Dastun B210. This is shaping up to be a great outing for us ice racers. Anyone else out there interested?

Bruce's Saab goes anywhere and does anything!

Found some nice pics from the '05 event HERE.

Theodore Goneos might join us in his Porsche 911. He tentatively plans to run the One Lap again the same weekend but that may fall through. If so he will join us.

I'm wondering if Bruce Carlton will be coming out of "Hillclimb retirement" to take on the Pennsylvania gang. Bruce used to run many hillclimbs years ago with his Yenko Stinger.

That really looks like a fun event. They need some directions on that website of theirs, unless I just missed them.

This looks like a fun afternoon of classic car racing.

My car would be eligible, too? I'm trying to go to Limerock on May 1, so I wouldn't be able to make this one, but it opens up more options for the "off season" for me. I never thought of my car as "vintage" before.

I hear you. They must really be looking to get more cars to these events. Why else would they only require a car to be 20 years old to be considered "Vintage"?

Who would want to see an '89 anything at a Vintage event? My car 32 years old and I think that it is barely old enough to be considered Vintage.

This just in from one of the organizers:

We are looking forward to a great year with an expanded Motor Show and a very large turnout of Corvettes, the featured marque in 2008. Everything is a GO for another great year and we are hopeful that we will begin to expand the historic class of cars. The ultimate goal is to eventually draw a nice sampling of race cars ranging from Brass era cars up to the antique delineation of 25 years or older. The AACA Museum is also working to help draw some of these older cars to the event, too.

At this point, the Hillclimb Committee is leaning toward having the historic cars run as their own Run Group, separate of the modified cars running full safety equipment. We've also added some rules regarding speed. Basically, as part of our risk management program, cars in the Historic class will need to run slower than a race-prepped car running full safety equipment. The margin should be 120% or greater, behind the race-prepped car. As an example, if a race-prepped car is capable of running the hill in 50 seconds, then a Historic class car of similar make/model should not exceed 60 seconds. For cars where we may not have any imperical data to use, our safety crew and drivers advisory committee will be watching for any potential safety issues. Historic class drivers will be under a very watchful eye to help keep everyone safe.

FYI: In addition to my regular committee duties on the advertising and marketing committees, I am also handling the Friday evening driver's welcome party, and the Saturday night banquet, which will be an outdoor pig roast/Barbeque at the hill, complete with a large tent for any inclement weather.
