Here's a picnic detail refresher for all:
The annual AMEC Picnic and Ice racing Awards are going to be held on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at the Subik Camp.

The club will provide the burgers, dogs and soda the attendees can bring salads, vegs and deserts. You can go water skiing, tubing or just hang out on the porch. Not far from the boat launches bring your sea doo or boat. If you missed it last year you missed a great day on the lake and a ton of good food. It will be from 1pm to 5 pm. You can RSVP at 762-8230 and let John or Pam know how many are coming.

Bryon Seyfried his son and I test drove the economy run route last night to write down the roads and mileages etc it should be a really nice drive. Some very scenic roads that are very easy to follow. Our goal is not to get you lost but to test your economic driving ability and have a great summertime view of some of the Adirondack Park. If most cars average 25 to 40 MPG they will only use 3 or 4 gallons so it will not be an expensive deal to participate in. Please bring the family and enjoy the views!

PS we may have a couple of other prizes to award also like the lowest MPG pig so if you don't think you can win the best MPG maybe you can shoot for the worst! Any Hummers out there... how about it Darryl you coming to the party!

I've got a guy from work that wants to join the club and enter the Economy Run. He's got a scooter that gets 80 mpg. Dave said if we get enough bikes that we will add a class for them.
My service manager has a 50cc [Honda I think] that they only made one year. He is claiming 100 mpg. But I think he might have to ride in the shoulder of the road because it won't go much more than 40 mph. 
I say bring them all on! It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

I like it bring them all on, that’s more members and more fun!
One interesting observation from last nights test drive of the route. We stopped for ice cream in Speculator and when we got out of the car it was beautiful much lower humidity and pleasant temps! When we got back to Fonda we couldn't believe how much more uncomfortable it was hot and humid. I really like the Adirondacks summer and especially in winter!

Just for fun this is what AMEC did on the last economy run (our first year as a club).

“AMEC Economy Run. 13 entrants were present. Gas tanks were topped off at Sherwood Smith’s station, sealed, odometer readings were recorded and the cars were weighed with driver and passengers in the car. Cars were started at one-minute intervals and followed a prescribed course of approximately 250 miles. A lunch break was taken at the half way mark of the course. At the end of the run, gas tanks were re- topped, mileage recorded, and results compiled. Winners were computed on the basis of best ton miles per gallon”
The winner was Ray Miller (Sunbeam Talbot) 57.4 TMPG
Second was Fred ****ey (Hillman Minx) 53.2 TMPG

Interesting Dave. Amazing back then they could get over 50mpg and todays cars(hybrids being the exception)average around 30mpg.

I have been trying to replicate the MPG figures that they got and I am not sure of what formulas they used. I don't think that they were true actual MPG's but a way to compare the MPG's. Bryon and I have been working on lots of possible formulas and will have something worked out that we think is accurate and explainable for us. They would have had to have been really thrifty to get those numbers. I did some internet searches and the Hillman Minx weights about 2040 pounds and it said it would normally get 27+ MPG so to get to 50 + doesn't seem possible. Fun history stuff to look at though.

Those figures were not actual mpg. They were Ton mpg. I don't know the formula.
Considering the horsepower and weight of todays cars as compare to cars in the '50 they do pretty good.
I once had a car that weighed around 2500 lbs and had 90 hp. If I could get 27mpg on a trip I was happy. Today, with the same weight and 140 hp if I get less than 35 on a trip, something is wrong.
I never kept track of mpg on the SAAB or the Goliath. My father said his Goliath got around 32-35mpg.
