New Interview (11/4) with Felix Burton on Scars and 2009 Tour

Excerpt:

Buzz: So, the new album "Scars" is out, and has been getting good reviews. Congratulations. How has writing for this album differed from the ones before???

Felix: Well, this time we did a bit of recording in New York and Berlin. I suppose maybe we've got some more well known people as guests than we had in the past. Often it's just been people from around the corner in Brixton. So, having someone like Yoko Ono on there, she's a well known name. So that was good. Collaborating and recording in some different places kind of changed it up from how it was before. I think we started off this time as we've been doing a lot of touring and we've had a lot of success in Europe, Australia and Japan. We've been doing these big rock festivals, which has all been great. But I suppose we found ourselves in a new place than we were before. We haven't been to America in about 3 years and we haven't done our main live show over here. We were kind of a bit tired at the beginning of the album and the fact that we started in the clubs and we were headlining these rock festivals. It kind of changed our approach when we started the album and just thinking what can we do to create some modern music that draws on all the influences of our past and to do something fresh. And we were probably in a darker place at the beginning of the album. So there's a bit more darkness and melancholy to the album. Then I think towards the end of the recording process we kind of saw the light a bit and then we did the Raindrops track. That was toward the end. So, a lightness and brightness came back. With club culture as well, I think that's happened anyway with music. So when we started, club culture was very depressing and minimal and that was kind of the style. Which is not very Basement Jaxx really.
