*Happy* - A Morning's Birdwatching...

I went to Pennington Flash Country Park today - info. on this great place follows...

PENNINGTON FLASH COUNTRY PARK
Off St Helens Road
Leigh
Greater Manchester
WN7 3PA
Tel 01942 605253

HOW TO GET HERE
BY CAR :- The Park lies close to the A580 East Lancashire Road and is well signposted from it
BY BUS :- From Leigh Bus Station take the 600 to the outskirts of the Park, alight at the Robin Hood pub,
for details Tel 01942 883501
ON FOOT :- The Park is only a short walk away from Leigh town centre, there is a footpath entrance into the Eastside of the Park from St Helens Road, which will take you along the old Pennington Railway line

200 hectare Country Park, centred on a 70 hectare lake or "Flash"
A variety of well maintained paths cater for walkers, cyclists and horse riders
One of the premier bird watching sites in the North West with several hides overlooking the Nature Reserve
Over 230 bird species recorded on site including such as Black-Faced Bunting, Nightingale, Marsh Harrier, Spoonbill and Leach’s Petrel
A wide variety of Butterflies, Dragonflies and Damselflies
Facilities include: small Information Centre, nine hole municipal golf course, children’s play area, picnic and recreation areas, fishing on certain shores, sailing, windsurfing and rowing through Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club - no public sailing
Pay and display parking, all hides have wheelchair access
I'd had a recent local magazine pushed through the door that highlighted that you could meet a ranger in one of the hides there... the lady very kindly answered all my questions, and highlihted one or two birds that I would have missed - particularly a newly hatched Lapwing chick that she observed through her 'scope and would have been too far for me to have viewed through the binoculars - great to see the little thing bobbling about within eyeline of the parent!

The main hides overlook the water there, but there is one that gives an excellent view of a 'feeding station' that boasted a wide selection of birds... plus rats and field mice all happily munching away!

Anyhow - here's the breeds I saw this morning - I was there for about three hours:

Swift, Canada Goose, Greylag Goose, Mute Swan, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Great Crested Grebe, Lapwing, Coot, Moorhen, Black Headed Gull, Ringed Plover, Wood Pigeon, Magpie, Blackbird, Reed Bunting, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Great Tit and Robin.

Not bad going eh - plus a great and relaxing way to spend a Sunday morning - better than sitting in front of the telly!
