Continued Training For Quality Engineering Professionals
Greetings S.A. ASQ Section,
Last January (2004) I returned to work after the holidays to find out that my company, a tier 1 automotive supplier in Auburn Hills, Michigan, had been sold to a German competitor. In April of 2004 I learned that a portion of the manfacturing operation was being transferred to a plant in Mexico. Further downsizing was expected by many of the 250 hourly and salary employees at the Auburn Hills facility. In May of 2004 I was told that my position was being eliminated due to company down sizing and restructuring. A number of other people also lost their jobs. At first I was devestated. I had a combined total of 15 years with the company. Remaining employees were shocked because of the people that were released.
My wife and I decided to use this as an opportunity to turn something bad into something good. We had talked about leaving the cold weather and unpredictable Michigan job market many times in the past. We now felt this may be the best time to take a "leap of faith" and just do it. We had been to San Antonio on vacation recently and just loved the climate and many of the other attractions. I am glad to be away from the Michigan weather.
Before I find my next position I wanted to ask my fellow S.A. quality colleagues the following:
1) What are local companies are looking for in Quality Engineers and other quality professionals so that I can better market myself for employment here?
I currently have a degree in Metrology & Calibration Technology, I have my CQE through ASQ and 10 years of Experience as a Quality Engineer with a background in APQP, Supplier Quality and dimensional measurement to name a few topics.
2) What addtional training (courses, seminars, workshops, programs, etc.) should I be pursuing to better myself, increase my number of job offers and obtain RU's for my CQE recertification?
Thank you for your time. Your comments will be appreciated.
