Installer Related Problem

I just realized I have had a problem related to the installation of the emulator. This was on a Win98SE machine. During the installation I got a message saying The Windows Installer was out of date and needed updating (or something to that effect, I was not paying much attention to it at the time). The update occurred and things were running well, I thought.

I noticed then the preprogrammed keys on my Compaq keboard no longer worked. Later I had problems trying to install a couple of programs getting automation errors and today an Incompatible Version RPC stub error.

Some googling and I found the solution to the RPC problem which in turn solved the other problems.

The solution was to re-install some dll files using dcom98.exe from Microsoft.

Re: Installer Related Problem

The emulator was developed on an XP machine. (Now it is a dead machine, but I digress ...)

Win98 is pretty old. I seem to recall other people having problems running it on Win98.

Prior to my motherboard going tits up, I never had problems -- or heard of anyone else who did -- with dll incompatibilities on XP. What probably happened is that the installer installed XP dlls over similarly named Win98 dlls, and as there is no such thing as "forward compatibility", your PC choked. :-)
