Oops Factor

Missions to Mulhouse and Friedrichshaven may accidentally bomb Switzerland by mistake. (Especially in bad weather.)

Note that this happened historically, on at least one occasion that I am aware of. (Perhaps oter times as well.)

The rule would be built in, non-optional.

Comments?

Re: Oops Factor

It happened more than once. In fact Carl Spaatz had to make a trip for the president to Switzerland to smooth over ruffled feathers over the incident.

Perhaps build it in but as a random effect under certain conditions...

Re: Oops Factor

If the bomber is in formation and the weather is clear, bombing neutral
territory is impossible (due to modifiers). The base chance is 1%. If the
bomber is out formation, and there are navigation problems, and the
weather is bad, then the chance goes up to 5%.

If bombs fell off target
And target is near Swiss border (Mulhouse or Friedrichshaven)
There is a 1/100 chance of error

Out of Formation: DM -1
Navig SW or Nav Equip Damage: DM -1
Clear Weather: DM +1
Poor Weather: DM -1
Bad Weather: DM -2

I know of one incident, I'll have to look it up and give you the source, that the formation just bombed the wrong target in good weather because of a navigational error (read human error). But I think the way you have it programmed will do. It just didn't happen that often to warrant another coding change.

Re: Oops Factor

Good weather is a DM +0. The original rules allowed for good, poor and bad. But the optional weather rules from the General also allow for clear (DM +1) and storm. (Abort mission for now, though eventually I may put in "alternate target", as alternate target bombing was quite frequent.)

So, if the weather is good, and there were no navigation issues, then there is a 1% chance. (Which might be a bit high, but probably won't happen anyway, so it can be left at 1%.)
