Bail rather than risk ditching

Give users the option to bail out/crashland in the land zone prior to a water zone if the bomber would otherwise have to ditch in the water zone.

Just to see how this would/could be done, I went ahead and programmed it. It works like this:

If the bomber is over land, and has 2+ engines out or a fuel shortage such that the it would eventually run out over water, then the user would be presented with an option to "Quit Now". This option would continue to be presented over each land zone.

For instance, on a mission to Emden, zones 2-6 are water and 7 is Germany. If the bomber was over zone 7 and met one of the above criteria, they would be presnted with the option both in outbound zone 7 and return trip zone 7. If the user did not take advantage of the opportunity, the mission would continue until its inevitable conclusion, with no further warnings.

If the mission was to Paris, in zone 5, then the user would receive warnings in zones 5, 4 and 3.

This would be of use to the user if they were hoping to eventually bail out over allied-held land zone before reaching the water. Or maybe the user might want to take his chances on rescue, rather than spend the rest of the war in a POW camp ...

Here is another situation that I encountered tonight that may be taken into account. My aircraft crashed on landing, killing all aboard. Both pilot and co-pilot were KIA during the mission, and the engineer was probably flying. What about giving crews the option of bailing over England (or Italy) in lieu of attempting to land if both flight deck crew are dead?

I have begun working on the emulator again after taking some time off. (House-hunting, new job, etc.) I don't think this will be too hard to do, and I already fixed one bug today, so I will do this next. I like to try and do one bug + one new feature at a time, to try and keep me from getting too frustrated from trying to figure things out. emoticon

Implemented.

It works like this: Given that a -3 is a KIA crash, a -2 is a wound +1 crash and a -1 is a wound crash (on the green chart) ... If all applicable modifiers are applied -- and the are the same if you attempt the landing -- if DM -6 or more (possible rolls -4 to 6), or the bombs are onboard, you will have the option to bailout over base or attempt the landing.

I've flown several dozen missions -- no escort, with Ju-88s and JG-26, not bothering to shoot back (to run up damage) and have only been presented the option three times, despite having about a half dozen instances of 400+ Peckham Points in damage. (Not all damage affects landings, such as a ball turret jam.) I was actually more likely to explode in mid-air than make it back to base to be presented with the option.

But it is in there.

Like I said, the same DMs are applied as for landing on land. If you want some further evaluations in the BailOverBase() routine, let me know ...

Excellent! I'll run some more missions this week and see if I can also "coax" the situation to try it out. Thanks!!

Well, it will be awhile before the mod is posted. I've just programmed and tested it. I need to fix some more things before I post the next release, as the next release will be a beta release, rather than just an alpha.
