Alternate target
In reality, bombing alternate targets was quite frequent.
One alternate target would be designated for each target in the database. The use of alternate targets would be built into the system, not a clickable mission option. The user would be presented with the choice to abort or bomb an alternate when they arrived next to (or over) a target which had poor or stormy weather. (Currently, the bomber bombs if it is poor and aborts if it is stormy, without any decision on the user's part.)
The weather over the target shouldn't be known beforehand. If the weather was known beforehand, and it was too bad to bomb, then operations would instead have chosen some other primary target. Not knowing the weather until you show up in (or adjacent to) the target zone, reflects the ability of weather to change over the course of 3-5 hours of outbound flight.
Given my expanded 94 target map of northern Europe ( http://prestonm.com/military/B17QotS/image/EmulatorNorthernTargetMap.jpg ) ... Every inland target has another target on its return path. To avoid carrying ordnance for an excessively dangerous distance, the alternate would be the first available target on the return path. For coastal targets, where the bomber only flies over water after leaving the primary target (e.g. Wilhelmshaven), the alternate would be its lateral neighbor closest to the return path from the primary target.
Of course, the alternate target may be more heavily defended than the primary, but that's the tradeoff if your crew wants credit for the mission. :-)

Re: Alternate target
Alternate's a great idea. Adds to the realism.

Re: Alternate target
Great idea. I like it. I fly missions in Talonsoft's old "Bombing the Reich" strategy game, and I always set alternates for each group. They're used frequently. Would love to see them implemented in B17QoTS.
