Durability

I’ve flown a dozen missions with the B-24d/e. Only lost one bomber (the D model) to a fuel leak, crew went MIA after ditching. So far the highest Peckham score has been 185 on the D model from 26 hits. I did receive on that mission walking hits that hit the control cables on the flight deck and a cable severed result in the bomb bay, but the plane kept flying. This might be a bug. Don’t like the blind spots on the D model, the E is much better, be even happier when I start flying a model with a ball turret. Max damage so far on the E model is 125 points from 20 hits.

Re: Durability

Does this refer to the B-24 variant itself, or to running B-24 missions within the emulator?

In any case, yeah, the B-24D has more blind spots than the E, and the E more than the G/H/J.

Control cables do not affect the bomber's lift or power, they only affect the pilot's ability to control the bomber, similar to the ailerons and other control surfaces.

Things like losing engines, fuel and wings, or having ordnance explode, are what bring the bomber down. emoticon

Re: Durability

Everything here is what I've flown thru the emulator. Just finished a horrid mission to Dresden. Bomber was shot to pieces. Well, until the final 10 hits that shot the wing off my bomber (B-24E). The plane was still flying with over 327 points of damage on the return leg from Dresden. Mind you, not much was still left working besides 3 engines and we had a fuel leak that meant we wouldn’t reach home . Final total damage was 457 points. 71 total hits

Try doubling that. I have actually brought a plane back to England -- crashed on landing, all KIA -- with well over 800 points damage. I have had over 950 points, but that plane didn't make it back. I have had multiple games over 600. How did I get that many points? Play hundreds of games, one. Also fly with the all the "bad" options on, including no escort. Fly to zone 12. Don't shoot back at the German fighters. It's kind of interesting to see how much damage you can sustain. emoticon

Re: Durability

One thing I have added that is not currently part of the Peckham Point schedule is additional damage for mid-air collisions (MAC). For instance, a burst in plane (BIP) -- beyond all the other damage it does and points you accumuluate thereof, tacks on a gratuitous 100 Peckham Points. I did the same thing with MACs. The more serious the MACm, the more additional points the bomber takes. I believe it ranges from 25 to 50. I know 50 is the max. That is in addition to the points due to damage resulting from the MAC. For instance, if the plane is knocked into a steep dive, and manages not to lose its wings, then there is a chance the bombs will rip through the hull. I assign 35 points for that: 10 for damage the bomb release and 25 for damage to the doors (which are both Peckham values), then tack on the additional 50 for a total of 85.

(Keep in mind, Peckham Points are only a measure of how much damage the plane has sustained, but do not in anyway affect performance. The only effect Peckham points have is on whether or not the bomber will be scrapped at the end of the mission.)
