The Meaning of Heavy Resistance
I just completed the run to Hamburg this afternoon as "tail end Charlie" in the low squadron. The summary follows:
14 Zones
2 waves driven off by fellow B-24s
22 Waves attempted to engage this aircraft
50 fighters encountered
6 driven off by escort fighters
44 successful fighter attacks
My plane has no right being on the tarmac at the end of this one! It's shot full of holes but 45% of the shell impact results were rated superficial damage. The remaining 55% resulted in damages or casualties. There *is* luck in this game and it's *all* in the dice.
It is a testament to the courage of the men that actually flew into this storm. God we owe them so much!
Until next time...
Ken

Re: The Meaning of Heavy Resistance
I am still having trouble with that damage table. I think my estimate of 160 is low, even though a lot of the damage was superficial (which I take to mean a lot of holes but nothing critical hit). I wish I could see some examples of damage incurred and how that damage was scored on the table.

Re: The Meaning of Heavy Resistance
Superficial damage on the blue and pink charts is 5 points per hit. "No effect" damage on the yellow chart is 1 point per hit.
If you could list your damage here, I'l show you how to add it up.

Re: The Meaning of Heavy Resistance
Here is what I have recorded. I may have missed a few superficial damage for no effect entries but this is pretty close:
Radio - out
Bomb Bay - SD
Port Wing - SD
Starboard Wing - SD
Nose - Navigator wound (SW, to USA)
Tail - Starboard rudder
Starboard Wing - #4 engine, oil tank, leak, self sealed
Port Wing - SD
Waist - Gunner KIA
Tail - Oxygen hit
(SD is superficial damage)

Re: The Meaning of Heavy Resistance
Points for "no effect" (1) and superficial (5) damage are the same regardless of
location. Alot of NEs and supers can quickly add up. (I'll give you an example
in a minute.)
10 = Radio - out
5 = Bomb Bay - SD
5 = Port Wing - SD
5 = Starboard Wing - SD
5 = Nose - Navigator wound (SW, to USA)
25 = Tail - Starboard rudder
5 = Starboard Wing - #4 engine, oil tank, leak, self sealed
*** I could the above as supericial since no real damage -- an actual
leak, or a fire -- occurred.
5 = Port Wing - SD
5 = Waist - Gunner KIA
10 = Tail - Oxygen hit
------------------------
80 Peckham Points
