Re: Snowmobiling
Regretfully the missing snowmobiler's body was recovered late yesterday (3/4/2006) afternoon. A tragic waste of a young life.

Divers find snowmobiler's body in lake
By GEOFF CUNNINGHAM Jr.
Staff Writer
MEREDITH—Fish and Game divers have recovered the body of a 19-year-old Manchester man who was killed late Friday after driving a snowmobile into an area of open water on Lake Winnipesaukee.
Authorities say alcohol is believed to have contributed to the incident, which also saw one of the man's friends swimming to shore in 34-degree water off Cattle Landing on Meredith Neck.
Norman Mabie Jr., 19, of 959 Hanover St. in Manchester, was found on Saturday after a search that included the use of the department's robotic underwater camera.
Fish and Game Lt. Jim Goss said the man's body was found in 30 feet of water about 300 feet from shore with the help of divers and a Tuftonboro Fire Department "airboat" hovercraft.
Emergency responders were summoned to an area of the lake off 102 Cattle Landing Road at 12:20 a.m. on Saturday.
Goss said Mabie and a group of students from Daniel Webster College in Nashua had traveled to the Lakes Region for the weekend and were staying in a lakefront cottage. Mabie reportedly was snowmobiling in an area of the lake off Cattle Landing Road shortly before midnight on Friday when he drove into an area of open water on the lake.
Goss the area of open water was about 300 feet by 70 feet and usually is frozen over by this time in winter.
The lieutenant said 20-year-old Bradford Nelson, one of the man's friends, also plunged into the water on a snowmobile, but was able to swim to shore in the frigid water.
"He was very lucky," Goss said.
Fish and Game officers and members of the Meredith Fire Department responded to the scene, but a shoreline search turned up nothing besides the man's hat and goggles, which were found on the ice near the edge of the open water. His boots were found floating in the water.
Officials suspended their search at 3 a.m. on Friday, but returned at 8:30 a.m. and subsequently found the man's body. Officials began by using the $10,000 submersible camera to locate the body, then sent divers to recover it.
Goss said officials believe alcohol was a factor and are continuing to warn about unsafe ice conditions on the lake.
"It's still treacherous out there," Goss said.
