OHRV / ATV Trails
I'm looking into getting an ATV. Seems like a great place to have one.
Does anyone know if cruising along the Sunset road and additional roads which lead to Crystal Lake etc is a very big 'no no?'
Also, are there any specific trails that can be used without having to trailer somewhere?
Thanks.

Re: OHRV / ATV Trails
My sons (8 & 10)and I ride dirt bikes all over the area, but we are VERY considerate of the noise that we generate and get into the woods as quickly as possible. I have found that stopping and talking to anyone you meet is the best way to keep access. Show them that you're not a 16 yo kid tearing up the roads.
The logging trails go everywhere in the area. Some of the trails are "not for motorized vehicles" but I have been riding for 40 years and been stopped only once by a Boy Scout and told that I shouldn't ride in that area. Several areas/trails are clearly marked for "ATV/OHRV" use, but there are no maps. You'll just have to explore.
Riding to the top of Mt. Major, Straightback or Avery Hill with my sons is one of the highs in my life. I'll never forget the Moose and Porcupine we saw one Fall ride! I hope you enjoy the riding.

Re: OHRV / ATV Trails
I wrote you to your inbox as well, but not sure if you check that. Thank you for the information, however, I am not having much luck locating the many logging roads you refer to. I live on Larry Drive and if you could give some general ideas of a few of the trails, I would appreciate it. Thank you for your help,
Arseno

Re: OHRV / ATV Trails
Arseno, most of the trails in your area are snowmobile trails and ATVs on them is frowned upon by Mount Major Snowmobile club. The one that goes through your area on Frohock is a major trail (believe the number is 22W) is a main corridor and is watched pretty closely.

I have a 2 seater 4x4 utility vehicle and when I spoke to someone about the road issue, I was told if it is REGISTERED and NO complaints are made by residences your chances of being stopped were a lot less likely to happen to ya. I went for the $73 registration and keep my nose clean with no noise and slow speeds and kind to pedestrians, it is working well. But I haven't run across any law enforcement people yet either.

Check out this thread from the Winni forum. There are a lot of good responses on this very question.

Re: OHRV / ATV Trails
I took a ride this passed weekend on trail 22W and it sure looks as if someone is riding on the snowmobile trails and the word is that they are going down under the power wires at Alton Shores Drive & Alton Mountain Road. This trail goes from under the power lines and then goes onto PRIVATE property and as I said word is they are not very happy and may stop the snowmobiling this coming season. The club is going to start monitoring it closely. if any of you that are reading this please, PLEASE stop using the trails with ATV's. We do not want to have our trails closed for this season or any season. This condition was told to me started just about the time that the request was put out on this site for knowledge of trails to ride on.
Thanks for not riding them any more if the person/persons that may have been using the trails read this little note.

Re: OHRV / ATV Trails
Sorry to hear this, but it is not me. I am very cautious and have only gone where I have permission. Also, I have no idea where this trail is that you speak of.

Arseno, I did not mean to apply that you or anyone else on the mountain did it. I was just trying to pass along some good info so that it would be known and problems in the future could be avoided.
I believe I met you on saturday up by the retention ponds off of Frohock Road. If that was you, they are sure doing some heavy work up in that area ain't they?? Stay cool and we'll see ya on the trails or by your homestead.
