Whats the story on Avery Hill/Mountain Rd.

So all summer we've been watching the extensive repairs being performed on the drainage culverts along Avery Hill Rd... but the big question is are they going to repave it? I sure hope so. Now that Gilmanton has finished the last section of paving on the mountain road piece, the Alton side looks worse than ever. I'm amazed the road lasted as long as it has after that rather unorthodox paving experiment they did initially, and enough is enough.

So, does anyone have any insight as to if and when this is happening?

Ken from the highway dept stated that they will re-pave Avery Hill Road and patch the section of Alton Shores Road that washed out this spring in the fall.

Well that is great news. I will be very excited to come up this fall and find some nice smooth pavement. Thanks!

I saw yesterday that Avery Hill Road was closed at Alton Mountain Road. Has paving begun yet? McD

Nope - it looks like they were doing some culvert work.

From the 10/5 Baysider

quote:

Construction on Avery Hill Road, which the town has been reconstructing, will conclude this year with only the binder being laid on the road surface. The final overlay will be done in the spring.

Excellent... If they don't pave it until spring that means they'll be a whole summer of smooth driving on it before the winter cracks it apart again.

The story I got on Avery Hill Rd. last week is this. They are going to put the rough coat down this fall and the patching on Alton Shores. They will be putting the final coat on in the spring after the rough coat has been torn up by the snow plows and freezing and cracking.

Yeah, I was up over the weekend, and the way the road is now won't hold up well to the winter. Although it brought back memories of the "good old days" when the road was dirt, it's just a bit toooo rural for my taste. Our car was absolutely filthy after driving downtown. As long as they get a base coat on before winter it should be fine.

I guess someone changed their mind. Avery Hill Road has been paved all th way from Alton Mountain Road to Mountain Road at the Gilmanton line. I agree that the binder would not have held up well over the winter. It was already pretty ripped up.

This afternoon the crew was finishing Alton Shores Road where Frohock Broemoticon opened it up in the floods last Spring. They worked pretty quickly but then again I couldn't believe how many trucks and how much equipment was brought in for that small stretch of road. It loemoticons great!
