Swimming Lessons Offered at Locke Lake

SWIM LESSONS AT LOCKE LAKE

The time has come to sign up for the Locke Lake Colony Swim Program. This year will be better than ever. There will be classes for "Parent and Child" (Infant to age 2) all the way to "Lifeguard Readiness" (for advance swimmers age 12-15), all taught by Certified Red Cross Water Safety instructors. Each lesson lasts a half-hour per day for two weeks. Each lesson will focus on the fundamentals of swimming and water safety. Each two-week session will end with an awards ceremony where the children will receive certification from the Red Cross. All levels are available for both sessions. Session 1 will be held July 10-21; Session 2 will be held July 24-Aug. 4. Following is a brief description of each skill level.

Parent and Child – Children learn to feel comfortable in the water with someone they trust in a structured environment.

Level 1 (exploring the water, age 3-4) – A fun and energetic program to ensure children learn safety and how to float and paddle.

Level 2 – (fundamentals, age 5-6) – At this age, most kids are either beginning to dunk their heads all the way under or even learning to jump from the side. They turn paddles into strokes and learn the pool rules.

Level 3 – (technique, age 7-8) – Children learn the basics of all the different strokes and kicks.

Level 4 – (stroke improvement, ages 9-10) – Putting it all together with rotary breathing, timing is everything and maybe some deep-water entry.

Level 5 – (fitness, age 11-12) – They love to race! Learn how fins can improve your kicks. Learn how to flip turn and lap swim.

Level 6 – (lifeguard readiness, age 13+) – Is your teen not quite old enough to lifeguard but he/she wants to get a head start? Learn all the basic rescue techniques to see if you have what it takes to become a lifeguard while having lots of fun with other teens your own age.

Register now through July 1 for all swim lessons, or stop by the Locke Lake Colony office weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or call 776-4400. And don't miss the July 15 fund-raiser for the swim program to help keep the cost low for all the students. Participants are invited to swim a one-mile length a cross Locke Lake. For more information, please contact Rhonda Gagnon, summer program coordinator, at 776-5288.
