Fire damages Half Moon Lake cabin

ALTON — Firefighters were quick to drop their sandbagging operation Monday afternoon to extinguish a small partition fire at a cabin on Half Moon Lake.
"The sandbag operation is out the window," Fire Chief Alan Johnson called over the radio, adding that he had asked for assistance with sandbagging from the National Guard.
There were no arguments from firefighters such as Belmont Lt. Sean McCarty who said he had no problem leaving the sandbagging behind to fight a fire.
"This is better than sandbagging," he said, walking up the stairs to the main road from the cabin.
Alton Assistant Fire Chief Scott Williams said the fire was caused by the homeowner soldering pipes in the kitchen.
"It was a small partition fire. They worked on it, but couldn't quite get at it," he said of the homeowners' attempt to put out the fire. "They were doing some renovations in the kitchen."
Williams said they opened the partition and used the thermal imaging camera to check for hot spots and to make sure there the fire had not extended into other parts of the cabin.
