BARNSTEAD — The board of selectmen heard some encouraging news Tuesday night about the state's plans to rebuild Route 28.
David Kerr, the board's liaison to the Lakes Region Planning Commission, reported that the Department of Transportation recently unveiled a 10-year plan for New Hampshire's roadways that includes the long-pending reconstruction of Route 28 in Barnstead.
While several projects have been pushed back as far as 2014, Kerr said, the Route 28 project is set to begin in 2009, with a cost of roughly $11 million – good news, according to board Chairman Ed Tasker.
"That means we can start budgeting for it," Tasker said.
Kerr suggested one way to come up with the town's share – imposing a $5 surcharge on automobile registrations. Any such measure, however, would have to be approved by a Town Meeting vote.
another hidden tax? ...property taxes aren't high enough?

The Baysider has subsequently stated that the state will pick up the whole cost and there will not have to be a registration surcharge.
