Milfoil Treatments - Locke/Halfmoon/Brindle

from the Baysider
Milfoil Committee reviews Suncook River treatment plan
“BARNSTEAD — With
$10,000 in funding secured
from this year’s Town Meeting,
Barnstead’s Milfoil Control
Committee met on April
10 to review its plans to treat
several areas of re-growth
along the Suncook River this
summer.
The committee managed
to nearly eradicate milfoil
from the Suncook until last
August, when an application
to retreat unexpected areas of
regrowth along the river was
denied by the state,which the
committee mistakenly
thought had pre-approved
any necessary retreatments.
With the help of administrators
from the Locke Lake
Colony and Half Moon Lake
associations, the committee
spent the fall surveying key
bodies of water throughout
Barnstead, narrowing their
focus down to the Suncook
River, Locke Lake and
Brindle Pond.
Committee Chairman Ed
Neister explained that the
plan calls for treatment to begin
on the Suncook in late
June, with the most highlyconcentrated
areas of regrowth
slated to be hit with a
double dose of the herbicide
2, 4d (200 pounds per acre) and
the less-concentrated areas
with a standard dose (100
pounds per acre), followed by
a 30-day waiting period, and
then a second dose.
A pair of UNH students,he
said, will assist in gathering
data to determine whether
the double dose proves powerful
enough to penetrate the
high level of silt that seemed
to be a key factor in the regrowth
of the invasive plant.
In the hope of making posttreatment
clean-up easier for
divers, the committee also
plans to lay Fab-Seal P.V.C.
Aqua-Safe liners over the
worst areas, in order to prevent
sunlight from reaching
the plants.
To help break the herbicide
up as the water flows
downstream,Neister suggested
that the committee contact
a local steel-working company
and design a two-foot-wide
“I-beam” that could be fastened
to the concrete apron
next to the dam.
With the beam positioned
in front of the dam at a 30 - 40
degree angle, he said, the
build-up of pressure would
force water flowing through
the dam to splash against the
beam and into the air, causing
the herbicide to aerate.
While Brindle Pond will
not be treated this year, Neister
said, the committee will
be assisting Locke Lake with
divers.
“I think we should have a
good year … and really knock
this stuff down,” he said.
The treatment report has
been submitted to both the
Department of Environmental
Services and the Department
of Agriculture.
Next meeting
The Milfoil Control Committee
normally meets on the
second Thursday of each
month at the Oscar Foss
Memorial Library.
Their next meeting has
been scheduled for Thursday,
May 8, at 7 p.m.
