Best Waroo 9 & 13
Bear in mind this is only my opinion of the kites, I am not a expert nor am I anything to do with Best or Waveriders.
Me: 38yrs
Weight: 84Kg
Time Kiting: Started xmas 2005
Board: 2005 Protoy 127
Harness: Dakine Fusion
Kite experience: I’ve owned, 2005 Fuel 11Mtr, was one of the first people to cross over to Bows, Got the Takoon Nova 12Mtr the month it was released, currently ride Ions 7 & 12 Mtr. Other kites flown are Sonics 06’s & 07’s, Fuel 15Mtr & Crossbow’s.
Riding Level: Intermediate, Jumping but no tricks other than board grabs, like to ride in the higher wind ranges, confident rider out all weather and sea states.
The kit
We’ll start where we start; the bag. The first thing that you notice is that the kite packs down into a tidy little bag, which is extendable. (Any kite manufacturer that does not do this with their bags, are out of touch) The bag is the rucksack type and is easy to carry and small enough to pack away if you only got a small car. Another thing I like about the bag is that it is not made of heavy canvas which is a pain in the arse to dry.
The Bag gets: 7/10 simplicity but how long will it last.
Setting up the kite
The kites are not one pump which I prefer, although I own one pump kites.
Pumped the struts up nice and hard, no problems with the valves due to the little stopper balls inside. The leading edge has 2 valves, 1 for pumping and 1 for dumping. So pumping up on both kites was straight forward and a nice change from the one pump.
Turned kites over and had a look around. Best have put a lot more effort into the construction of these kites and it is noticeable straight away. A larger area of extra strong Dacron on the wing tips, more scuff protectors, extra protection at the end of the struts.
There seems to be a lot of Batons on the kites and they do look a bit flimsy, but you do get spares and they are very easy to replace.
The Bridling looks simple and is no more complicated than any other bow kite.
There are several settings on the rear bridle for more or less power this is something you have to play with to find what is right for you, I set the rear lines midway.
You can change several settings on the bridling to change the way the kite flies and bar pressure, but I kept it standard.
The kite construction & setup gets 7/10 The one thing that let it down for me was that fact that there were knots on all line attachments rather than going gook proof and putting larks head knots on the front lines and normal knots on the rears.
The Bar
Unwound the bar and on first inspection it looks pretty good. But when I walked the lines out I didn’t like the fact that the right lines, front and back are grey and left lines are red rather than just the steering lines being colour coded. I didn’t like the larks head knots on all lines.
The bar has got coloured sides ( red and Grey) but I think it would be better if left and right were better represented on the lines and in easier view so its easier to see when your getting hammered.
The chicken loop looks a little cluttered but is pretty straight forward, some people like this look others want it as simple as possible.
The amount of chicken loop throw is easily adjusted buy pulling one of the two lines that run through the bar then tying a small knot in it, I found about 3 inches was enough to bring the depower straps more into reach. It can easily be put back. The adjustable stopper is great and really easy to adjust and has enough grip to stay where you put it for the whole time your out.
The leash attachment on the centre line is a bit tight to get to once there is pressure in the kite if you forgot to attach you leash before launching.
The quick release is a bit small and would be difficult to get to in an emergency.
Once the kite is in the air and you try to adjust the depower strap, you notice how tight the strap is, and is very frustrating in light airs, you also have to be careful not to pull to the limit of the strap as it can jam.
The bar feel was really comfortable and one of the nicest bars I’ve held.
There is also the option for leash attachment on the steering line
The Bar & Lines gets 4/10. Attachment points are not kook proof, Depower strap is CRAP, leash point to tight, Bar could do with elastic band things on the ends to secure lines when rolled up. Also the micky mouse ears looks a bit cheap, when compared to other bars of the same value. On the upside bar grip is nice, adjustable depower throw really good, and stopper really works.
In The Air
I flew these kites at the bottom end of their range
13 Mtr 13 – 18 mph
9Mtr 18 – 23
13mtr at Lancing low tide.
Kite in the air felt a bit under powered so brought it down, changed the rear lines a couple of knots put it back up and wow, suddenly I could feel the pull on the front lines. Got going in around 15mph, very strange feel, not bad just different to what im used to. The kite just pulls like a tractor.
Hardly any bar pressure but you find your spot in the window then park and ride, when the wind dropped, a little bit of sinning was required but very little effort, soon as the wind picked up maybe around 18 mph I was very comfy and felt like this kite would have no problem pulling me across a choppy sea in low winds.
Tried a couple of jumps but not really enough wind, got about 5feet of the water, still noticed the floatyness of the kite. Bar feel when trying to jump feels a little spongy and would take some getting used to. Again the depower strap was giving me jip.
This was the first time ive been on anything bigger than a 7mtr and winds less than 25mph in over 2months, and I was pleasantly surprised.
I felt that the kite would have quite a low top end like around 25mph max, but I cannot say for sure. As a low wind medium sized kite I was more than impressed.
For light winds I’ll give it 7.5/10 would have been better with a different depower system.
9mtr Goring low tide.
On land kite didn’t feel like it had any power but got to the water gave it a go, and no problem. Wind was about 20mph water start was very smooth, and again the 9mtr just pulled me along without a problem. A very weird feeling, you can feel that your underpowered, yet your still being pulled through the chop, again not enough wind for big airs, but certainly enough wind at 20 mph to be practicing back loops, toeside, waves and transitions. Even more for someone lighter than myself.
Weird but nice bar pressure, though I think you’d want more when jumping to know where the kite is. It feels as though this kite would boost big with little effort once past the mid way wind range.
I’ll give 7.5/10. again I was conscious of the depower strap hassle.
Packing down
The only thing that made packing down a pig was that the rain was coming, and I had to spend time pinching the valves and trying to get the air out the struts. This would have been so much easier if they attached them little stick things that you insert in the valves.
Easily folded and packed in bag, fits nicely behind the car seat.
Overall
I really enjoyed flying these kites, Considering it was at the lower end of the wind ranges, it has been said that it almost feels like your cheating, and it does, as so little effort is needed.
If your crossing over from C-kites you would probably like the way the kite pulls,
But you will have to put your tricks on hold for a few sessions until you get dialled in.
If you are a Beginner to intermediate then the Waroo’s will feel you with confidence and send you flying upwind, jumping off waves trying new stuff in no time at all.
Also good for people that suffer with elbow, knee, shoulder problems, it is so easy on the body.
If your interest is in really powered moves, handle passes, kite loops and you want to work upto comp level, then you need a all grunt C-kite.
I have also flown the 11metre one now as well and it is equaly as good.

Re: Best Waroo 9 & 13
hi not sure if im meant to comment here but hey....
Iv only been kiteing for about 2 months now. I learnt in littlehampton and got on the board fairly confidently but that was about it and then it was off to Egypt :-)
Out in Egypt, Soma Bay I rented out this kite and it was great. The amount of control you have over this kite is great. I got more confident and in no time i landed my very first jump :-)
This kite is great for beginners and also its great for really powered tricks as iv seen them being done (not by me!!!)
From the time i have had using this kite i would say that it was worth the money.
Anyway thought I would add my opinion...

Re: Best Waroo 9 & 13
Well said Disco boy.
Dont listen to anyone who slates them.
Are you gonna get a waroo? if not what kite you gonna get?
If you get a waroo, get the 9, Or the
ION 2, 8.5 stick with it for 12 - 18 months then upgrade to a high depower C kite.
If your gonna go for a C kite to start with then I'd suggest a 8mtr JN. or if your nearer 10 stone then get a 10mtr JN, but if I remember rightly your quite light.
When we gonna see you on the beach?

Re: Best Waroo 9 & 13
Hi Ed, i haven't been down for ages but now im up and riding i will be down quite often.
I do really like the waroo, im still in egypt and dont get back till the 25th so you wont see me till then. Im not sure whether to get a bow, a c-kite or a hybrid its all too much. The waroo i like because of the control you have and its sort of going into the performance end of kites. Its a definate maybe, everyone at Goring flies c's dont they???
See you soon
