Referees

Hi guys

I used to play for Widcombe W and have been refereeing some of their games since I stopped playing. I officiate in the local and County leagues and am thinking that it might be useful to formalise the appointment of referees in the BCFA (at least Div 1)? I know that some teams tend to have their 'own' ref for home games, but wouldn't it be better to have a list of refs and to mix it up a bit? At the moment it seems patchy as to whether there will be a referee...also the proper reporting of cautions, sendings-off and misconduct for any league affiliated to the FA should be more thorough and complete.

I feel that the BCFA games would be a good introduction for newly-qualified refs as the level of dissent / misconduct etc. is better than in other leagues (while the quality of football is generally very good). I know the officer for referee training in the Bath RA group and would be happy to try to establish contact with the equivalent person in Bristol in order to get new local refs started on this kind of game as early as possible.

I'd be happy to attempt the role of appointing refs to matches from next season if you think this worthwhile? It goes without saying that existing relationships with referees who officiate in the BCFA would form the foundation of the list.

Let me know!

Re: Referees

This sounds like an excellent idea and offer and is something often raised my managers at league meetings.

Can I recommend you email Simon Baker or another commitee member asap.

Re: Referees

The issue has allways been can we find someone reliable to be the BCFA Refs secretary. It is a thank-less and time consuming task that no-one really wants to sign up for.

If you want to take on the role let me know and I will raise it at the next committee meeting.

Re: Referees

Good idea but I agree with Si that it would be a difficult to implement and I think there would be a lack of accountability if a ref was late, didn't turn up etc. However, I do think that it would be great to have a contact who can give us details on newly qualified referees. There have been concerns posted elsewhere on the message board about the standard of refereeing in the league, and whilst I recognise that even at our level its a tough job I think I share those concerns. At the end of the day the refs are getting paid to perform (however little) and this season we have had refs who didn't actually know some of the more basic laws of the game. I think newly qualified refs are more likely to make an effort when reffing games and also agree that our league would be a pretty good starting point for them.

Re: Referees

Yes i agree. This league would be ideal for them. We do struggle to find referees who are willing to give up their saturday mornings as most of them are already officiating on the Saturday afternoon, and as well as the newly qualified refs being more likely to make an effort, they are also more likely to want to gain match practice.

Our ref is the cup final ref and i'm not sure how much more i can take to be honest! We were cruising against Hope 1-0 and he awards a last minute penalty for NOTHING! Last kick of the game... Shocking! That's not the only story - there are plenty more i can assure you!!! The worst thing is referees like Pete normally ref because they can't play, but any teams in Div 2 will back me up when i say he is actually a great player and we miss him when he's not playing!

Simon - if you can post onto here what would be involved as 'BCFA Referee Secretary' then we can ask members of our squad who we think might be able to take this task on?

Thanks,

NJ

Re: Referees

I think a Referees Secretary's responsibilities should include:

1) Appointing refs;
2) Collecting feedback on the referee from participating teams in each game. This to include 1-10 rating and allow for any comments relating to punctuality etc. This to be kept confidential and used only for monitoring purposes and/or appointing correct official to each game;
3) Collecting feedback from the referee after each game including sporting marks 1-10 for each team as well as any other issues relating to the game (punctuality etc.);
4) Be a point of reference (but not an authority) for any queries.

I think the Refs Secy would have to be a qualified ref.

I would also suggest that the referee's report card includes a tick box whereby he confirms that he has duly completed any relevant reports of misconduct. If bookings are issued in any BCFA game, they must be reported to the appropriate FA. It is simply not right that this reporting is only completed in a very sketchy manner at present.

Why not also put Assistant Referees on the cup semis and Final?

Unfortunately NJ, there is no guarantee of perfection in refereeing at any level, not even the dizzy heights of the BCFA!

Re: Referees

If you're talking about the game I think you are then apparently there was more than one dubious penalty awarded! Seriously though, I have no probs with refs making mistakes, but on Saturday at the 7 a side I was penalised because as I was taking the ball past someone they forced me off the pitch - the ball stayed in play. I carried on my run, picked up the ball on the other side of the player and got blown up for exiting and re-entering the field of play. The same ref later made us re-take a goal kick when we were one nil down with a minute to go because our goalkeeper (who had retrieved the ball) wasn't in position. In an earlier game the ref had stopped play when I was clean through on goal because one of the opposition players used the f word - perfect opportunity to play advantage. I had played under this ref earlier in the season and mentioned after the game that I disagreed with his application of the laws of the game. I was polite and respectful in doing this but he got very angry and when I said not to worry about it he started following me shouting. I would not be surprised if some strange decisions on Saturday stemmed from this. Sorry - just wanted to get that off my chest. The point is that I think some established refs don't feel pressure to keep up with the play or the laws of the game simply because they have been refs for a long time. This wouldn't be the case with newly qualified refs. Having ranted a bit, I should add that I think the majority of games I've played in this season have been well refereed. In particular was impressed with the refs at Thornbury, Widcome Wanderers and Hanham and our team made a point of telling them this. We're sticking with ours for next season as well.

Re: Referees

lol....your 7 a side sounds funny! Would have loved to watch it!

I do agree with you about some of the younger refs would be good, its a hard job but someone has to do it. I even had a ref try to stare me out over against a team who have now folded...mmmm
Try watching the game I thought! Your ref as well was top notch, but the pitch is a little on the narrow side!

Re: Referees

The narrow pitch was a deliberate attempt to make the most of our unique 'no-wingers, not much flowing passing and movement, hoof the ball out of defence and hope someone gets on the end of it, make sure the oppostion can't play proper football' brand of play. A tactical ploy that I think we all agree was a resounding success.
