Rael, your challenge for today is to refer to one of the players as "pugnacious" - a great word not used enough in my opinion. Please report back if it was used and if so, in what context.

Two bookings inside 10 minutes saw Villa's pugnacious midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker dismissed
with an hour gone.

Am I missing something but this doesn't make sense! 2 bookings inside 10 minutes but dismissed with an hour gone sounds like the ref took 50 minutes to get the red card out!

no, you are kind of right.

'two bookings inside 10 minutes' to me meant that he received two bookings in the space of less than ten minutes at a given point during the game, otherwise i would have put 'two bookings in the first ten minutes'

however, it can be misunderstood, so i'll change it for my final draft!

This is the finished draft:

A Wayne Rooney double helped Manchester United beat Aston Villa 4-1 and move back into second place in the Premiership.
Villa started brightly and went ahead through Gabriel Agbonlahor on 13, but the in-form Wayne Rooney scored well taken goals on 36 and 44 minutes to give United the advantage. Rio Ferdinand’s goal in first half stoppage time after calamitous defending from the Villa backline completed a disastrous ten minutes for the home side.
Two rash challenges inside eight second half minutes saw Villa’s pugnacious midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker make an early exit on the hour mark, and Villa’s misery was compounded just six minutes later when ‘keeper Scott Carson brought down Carlos Tevez and was also dismissed. Wayne Rooney spurned the chance of a hat trick as he saw his penalty saved, but a Ryan Giggs goal on 75 minutes completed the rout and gave United their seventh straight league win.

It's so hard to cut it down to something that can be delivered in 40 seconds, even this might need to be cut as i'm coming up and 42, and we will be mark down for that, as we are told every week:

in radio, running over is the cardinal sin!

Rael - pugnacious and calamitous in the same report. Nice. I should ask Davo to come up with next week's word of the week to include in a match report. He's far better with big words than I am.

i was thinking of going with the 'mercurial wayne rooney', but though that was just too far, this is supposed to be suitable for the average listener in the north west emoticon

Very good. Only thing I would say is that generally in media reports, once a player has been mentioned once in the report in full, he is only mentioned by surname afterwards, so cut the second 'Wayne'. That will also save you about half a second. Cutting pugnacious could save you the other one and half..... emoticon

How about...

A second booking saw Villa's pugnacious.....

That'd save you the time, although it doesn't sound quite as good.
