Here's a puzzle for you -

Explain this sequence of numbers.

6, 6, 4, 7, 5, 5, 6, 2, 9, 7, 5, 5

In my opinion, that's way too many - average of over 5 changes per match! I think it should be maximum of 2/3 changes, defence should be the same as should strike partnership, only really the wingers I would change regularly. In 153 matches Rafa has kept the same team just once (this being in his 100th). Why that night was special I don't know as it was only against Bordeaux. Maybe he wanted to avoid headlines about a century of changes.

Interestingly, Houllier went 2 years without keeping the same team, and both have done well in winning us cups but only ever once getting 2nd in the league, and obviously never 1st. Maybe it says something about the managers we are picking or the size of our squad. I would say both but United and Chelsea have big squads - I would love to see how many changes they have made to each team this season. Maybe someone could work it out?!

Dan - you're blinded by poor stats.

The same team started against both Villa and Chelsea at the start of the season.

The only reason your numbers are so high is that he switches players in different competitions. I bet if you looked at league games only you'd see all numbers below 5.

Yeah think you're right about Villa and Chelsea but in between we were away to Toulouse so still plenty of changes at the start of the season.
