JP, just to clarify what I meant by Spurs fighting for mid-table mediocrity...

10 West Ham 26 11 7 8 31 23 8 40
11 Tottenham 26 8 8 10 48 41 7 32
12 Middlesbrough 27 7 8 12 25 41 -16 29

The league table doesn't lie! emoticon

We might have spent £46m, but it was less than United spent (£51m), so not surprising that we're further behind them. It's still been a disappointing season, but I think Babel will be stronger next year for one. I also think the number of injuries we've had in defence is a big reason for us struggling (Agger is finally playing for the reserves tonight).

Plus, don't forget that we've actually only lost 3 Premiership games this season - one less than United and the same as Chelsea. The problem has been that we've drawn so many (11 compared to United's 4 and Chelsea's 7). Our away form is also much better than it has been in recent seasons. I actually honestly believe we're closer than people think we are. It's not a huge step up to turn some of those draws into victories. If we can spend again this summer, we could be close to the others next year, and who knows how far we could go? After all, Arsenal finished last season in 4th on the same number of points as us, yet are challenging for the title this season.

You may say I'm dreaming, and I might well be, but I think you have the right to think complete rubbish about your own team. emoticon

I agree that Liverpool are pretty much where Arsenal were last season (although more realistically where Arsenal were the season before last). They have one or two excellent players, some other reasonable ones and a lot of average ones. The key difference between the two clubs is that Arsenal have Wenger who has a proven track record of developing young 'average' players with potential that nobody else can see into fantastic match-winners.

I just don't see that Benitez has that quality, and hence Liverpool's chances of making the jump from where they are now to 'The Big 3' are slim.

But we've been concentrating on the Cup
emoticon This just shows how important it is to get a good start to the season. ours was rubbish & has surely cost us a place in the UEFA cup through the league. Its not over yet though...

True. I don't consider Spurs to be a mid-table side, but as you say, a good start is very important. There are too many decent sides challenging for Europe this season - to make up 15 points in your last 12 games to catch the likes of Liverpool and Villa is too much IMO, not because Spurs aren't capable of going on a run, but because I think Liverpool, Villa and Everton are all too good to lose five more games than you!
