Unusual to see such generosity from a premirship club but good on Villa. Everything I hear about their American owner I like. Sounds like they have a good 'un there.

About as likely as Ronaldo leaving United. Torres loves Liverpool and after the season he's had, why would he leave? Yes, we didn'twin anything but we got much closer to the top than last year.

Surprised nobody has bought this one up yet. Makes Dan's comment above slightly ominous for Liverpool fans though....

Oh dear Dan.... OH DEAR BEANO AND FEARS!!!!!!

Bear in mind this is the Guardian and not the Star or Sun (the 'Knowle papers' as I like to call them emoticon ) and the Man U fans might need to start praying that Rooney remembers where the goal is.

In all seriousness, it is starting to look like a done deal. There was even confirmation on Barca's website (it's been removed) and most of the respectable papers are now running the story.

Personally, I'm gutted. Though not a Man U fan they gave me more footballing pleasure than most clubs and very few people could deny that watching Ronaldo on his game was a great laugh. I doubt he'll become a better player in Spain.

Maybe it'd give Man U the finances to buy Torres emoticon . I reckon that if he goes they'll pick up Benzema. You heard it here first! (Except for when you heard it in all the reports suggesting they were going to buy him earlier in the season.)

Good.

I'm still not worried about Torres.

I still won't believe it until it happens. It's obvious he wants to go there, but I think it may not happen until next summer (as some papers have also suggested). I can't believe United/Fergie's threat that they'll let him rot in the reserves rather than sell him. Considering the debt United are in, it doesn't make sense to have a player being paid £120k a week (or whatever it is) doing nothing, when they could sell him for £60m if the papers are to be believed, and get him off the wage bill. He'll go either this summer or next - get used to the idea United fans. emoticon

I'd like to think that Torres has a bit more loyalty about him than Ronaldo, considering how long he stayed at Atletico, and he seems to love it at Anfield. I'm not worried about him at the moment, but if Rafa were to go, there'd be a few nervous moments. I guess it's also quite possible that in a few years time, he may decide to go back to Spain.

I always find it bizarre when fans talk about players being "loyal". Fans forget this is their job. Advantages for Ronaldo of going to Barca/Real:

Twice the money
Nicer climate and lifestyle
Closer culture to his own
Closer to home

Nath, you telling me if a rival employer to HL came and offered to double your wages you'd stay out of loyalty. Come on, per-lease.

I can't see Man U letting him rot in the reserves either but surely he has to say that to ensure the teams wanting him know they won't get him cheap.

I think next year is more likely. An interesting article in the Times about the Barca presidency up next year and the challenge to Laporta has links with Ronaldo's agent and they always like to increase their claim to the presidency with an outlandish transfer target.

To be honest if he wants to leave then go. Thanks for the memories and do one, ungrateful little ****.

If we do sell then id like to think we would completely rip off Real ask for a ridiculous amount of money, over 100 million. He has 4 years left on his contract so lets make the most of it.

Nobody has ever left United under Fergie to go onto bigger and better things, and we always move on. We've got over Beckham and Van Nistelrooy recently, also Cantona, who at the time was a massive blow.

So if he really wants to go, we will be fine, im sure of that.

It's not really the same though. If a rival employer to HL offered to double my salary, then of course I'd take it. However, it would make a big difference to me. If you're already being paid £5m a year, then having that doubled to £10m a year doesn't really make any difference to his quality of life, especially when you consider the sponsorship he'd get whoever he played for. I can see that he'd want to move to Madrid for your last three points, but I don't think the first one should be a consideration.

By loyalty, I'm not saying a player should stay with a club all his life. Didn't Ronaldo only sign a contract extension at the beginning, or maybe even part-way through the season? If he wanted to move so soon, why sign that extension (I guess because of the salary increase)? In the same way, Torres only signed for us last summer, so I'd be a bit disappointed if he decided to up sticks so soon because someone came in with more money.

I personally would be a bit unhappy with Ronaldo if I was a Man U fan (I'm guessing Beano is judging by his post). I think he could be a bit more dignified than basically saying "If Madrid are going to pay me that much, then yes, I want to play for them." It would've been better if he'd said something like, "I'm happy playing for United, but it has always been my dream to play for Real, and it would be nice to be closer to my family. If they came in with an offer for me then I would seriously consider it, but it would be up to the clubs to agree a fee first." Something like that sounds much better I think.

To be fair to him, at least he's been honest saying he'd like to play for them. Owen went months (years even) saying he wanted to stay at Liverpool without signing a new contract, and would happily have let his deal run out before moving on. emoticon

Anyway, as Beano says, United will survive, but it'll be a hell of a loss to them.

I've never bought that argument to be honest. If you have ever spent time with people who earn ridiculous amounts of money, one thing you will generally find is that they often crave more, once they get a taste for it to a certain extent. I have seen that first hand with the shareholders of my company who were made millionaires when they sold out and they were fighting over £10,000 at times.

Footballers have a definitive period of earnings so who would begrudge a player the opportunity to maximise his earnings? Maybe his conscience would be better if he didn't think like that but does he strike you as the sort of person that would be bothered. I obviously don't know the bloke but he seems rather obsessed with himself to worry what others think.

So another of the great number 7's at United comes and goes.

Best
Robson
Cantona
Beckham
Ronaldo

My prediction for the next great 7 is Darren Fletcher. emoticon
