It's not really the same though. If a rival employer to HL offered to double my salary, then of course I'd take it. However, it would make a big difference to me. If you're already being paid £5m a year, then having that doubled to £10m a year doesn't really make any difference to his quality of life, especially when you consider the sponsorship he'd get whoever he played for.
I've never bought that argument to be honest. If you have ever spent time with people who earn ridiculous amounts of money, one thing you will generally find is that they often crave more, once they get a taste for it to a certain extent. I have seen that first hand with the shareholders of my company who were made millionaires when they sold out and they were fighting over £10,000 at times.
Footballers have a definitive period of earnings so who would begrudge a player the opportunity to maximise his earnings? Maybe his conscience would be better if he didn't think like that but does he strike you as the sort of person that would be bothered. I obviously don't know the bloke but he seems rather obsessed with himself to worry what others think.
That is very true (bold bit). In the old days (probably pre-Premiership and Champions League), it was a bit more important to earn as much as you could during your career for when you had to retire. These days, top players like Ronaldo could retire and live comfortably for the rest of their lives at 21, even younger sometimes.
It's quite a contrast that at the top of the page is a story about Villa appointing a charity as their shirt sponsor for free next year, and then we've moved onto Ronaldo wanting to sign for Madrid so that he can earn £200k a week after tax.

To be honest if he wants to leave then go. Thanks for the memories and do one, ungrateful little ****.
If we do sell then id like to think we would completely rip off Real ask for a ridiculous amount of money, over 100 million. He has 4 years left on his contract so lets make the most of it.
Nobody has ever left United under Fergie to go onto bigger and better things, and we always move on. We've got over Beckham and Van Nistelrooy recently, also Cantona, who at the time was a massive blow.
So if he really wants to go, we will be fine, im sure of that.
You'd seriously need to find a goal scorer as Rooney and Tevez won't be prolific.
You'll get at least 50 mil for him.

Re: Premiership thread
His mum says he is staying
I honestly believe he will stay, for one maybe two more years. And then he will go to Madrid. It was different with Beckham and Van Nistelrooy as we wanted to sell. He is one year into a five year deal, and im quite confident he will stay.
But he has been a complete idiot about it.
Flynn, we would ask for more than £50 million, im 100% sure of that.

Re: Premiership thread
I think this is the scenario where loyalty in football should be seen. Manure have stuck with him, giving him the chance to prove himself... which he has... and now he wants to jump ship.

I just don't get this talk of "loyalty". Its a job to him. "Man U have stuck with him" what do you mean like that? They paid Sporting Lisbon or whoever it was quite a bit of money, they have played him and he has improved to be one of the best in the world. Someone comes along willing to pay him more, and play for one of the great teams in the world.
Football fans need to understand that the way they feel about the club is different to the way the players feel.
