To be fair, he's a decent Premiership player, and has been Middlesbrough's best player for the last two or three seasons. He's not going to give us the extra we need to win the league, although I kind of feel that Downing at £12m is better value than Bentley at £15m. Rather have David Silva though.

Exactly, surely you should be going for better? Instead of buying 4/5 decent players each summer, you should just be adding 1/2 real quality players, like torres.
And then maybe one year, next year could actually be your year...

no but seriously, I think we're agreed that Downing has played very well for Boro but is not a top class player and the sort that Liverpool need to really progress.
However, I think out of the two of them, Bentley has the potential to progress more so than Downing and has more flair and a greater ability to beat a man and therefore would be the better buy.
Although I think we will all agree that Barry would make the Liverpool fans happier!
Re: Liverpool Discussion Thread Fabio Capello singled out Downing as the English player who has impressed him the most during his spell in charge of the national side. Downing seems to have loads of confidence and ability to match, I think he would be a good signing for any team in the premiership, Man Utd and Chelsea included.

Are you comparing a right winger with a left winger?
Bentley would probably be a better signing for Liverpool because I think Babel is a better player on the left than Kuyt/Benayoun and Pennant on the right of their midfield.
I would rather have Downing in my side than Giggs, Malouda and Hleb (because Downing gives you more width/balance). That's the other top 3 clubs.
