Re: Liverpool Discussion Thread

I agree Bentley is the better player for Liverpool and quite like the look of Babel so that makes more sense.

Maybe if Downing improved his right foot he would be enough of an asset to a 'big' side as he could play on both wings and then cut in from the right from time to time (as I think he has a decent shot on him).

I also think that he would be a better player to have than Giggs (due to age) and Malouda (I do not need to justify) but both clubs have other players who could play in those positions (Joe Cole, Kalou, Nani, Ronaldo) better than Downing. I think that Arsenal and Hleb play differently with a series of short pass and moves around the edge of the box so am not sure if Downing works in that unit. But him coming in would give them balance and could result in them changing styles slightly.

Babel is right-footed so could play on the right. I think he's played on the left mainly to fill a gap, as we don't have anyone else who's any good there, but ultimately, I think up front will be his position. He's a striker really anyway, and has made a few sub appearances there, but I think Rafa is trying to do a 'Thierry Henry' with him.

I'd rather have Bentley than Downing given the choice, but considering the money we have to spend, Downing at £12m may make more sense than Bentley at £15m. They're both about the same age (Downing a month older than Bentley), so their potential ought to be about equal.

Gareth Barry is a decent enough player, but I think Alonso is slightly better, and I can't see the point in us buying Barry unless we're gonna get at least the same for Alonso. At the moment, the figures going round are £18m for Barry, £10-12m for Alonso I think. If that's the case, then I think we should tell Villa and Juve to forget it, and spend the money elsewhere. Bentley would be good, Downing I'd be ok with, but the player I'd really like to see us sign is David Silva. He's supposedly going cheap as Valencia have cash problems, and we need a player with a decent headbutt.

Categorically incorrect.

Explain. You cannot possibly argue that Bentley has done more in an England shirt or in the Premiership than Downing.

He's not had as many caps as Downing but Downing has never done anything for England. And, yes Bentley has done more than Downing in the prem. He is a much better player.

I'm not convinced about signing Barry and certainly not for 18mil. Getting rid of Alonso and bringing in Barry is not an improvement IMO, so to splash 18mil is not worth it, yes we'll get about 10mil for Alonso (which is a pathetic amount). I really like Alonso and when he's on form, he's one of the best passers of the ball in the world.

That should be in a thread all of its own titled 'outrageous summer signings'.

Don't think that will happen.

Flynn - I think the trouble is, Alonso (as good as he is) hasn't been 'in form' when he's played where as Barry has been exceptional this season. Too many people want to change things at the first sign of problems where as sticking with Alonso would probably be fine. Its the same with getting rid of managers at the drop of a hat...

It appears that Mascherano is going to miss the start of the season, inclucing both Champions League qualifiers. He has been called up to the Argentinian Olympic squad.

Masch call up.
