The Apprentice

Anyone else watching this? I only saw Wednesday's episode last night (thanks to catch up TV emoticon ), but man, it was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. This week, the teams had to come up with a greetings card, something that there wasn't currently a market for.

Team Alpha
They came up with National Singles Day. The thinking was that on Valentines Day, a lot of single people probably feel crap, so they invented this day and placed it on Feb 13th, the day before Valentines Day. They had to pitch the idea to 3 companies (Clinton Cards, Tesco and someone else). Clinton Cards and Tesco both questioned the wisdom of the date, pointing out that their cards would be fighting it out with huge Valentines displays. They then decided to scrap the date for the third pitch, but didn't come up with a new one, so when asked about the date, they asked the person they were pitching to, to suggest a date. emoticon Incredibly, this third company bought up 19500 cards from them, Clinton bought 1500 and Tesco bought none.

The best part of their efforts had to be when three of the team spent 3 hours deciding on whether their cards should read "National Single's Day" or "National Singles' Day". They even tried phoning the Daily Telegraph and the local library to try and find an answer. Strangely, they didn't ask Lumpar (unless that bit was edited out).

Team Renaissance
All of the above is nothing in comparison to this team though. Led by Kevin (strong West country accent emoticon , announced at the start that he inspired people to work for him, owned a house at 20, 2nd house and porsche at 23), they decided to go for green cards. Basically, the cards had a message about what people should be doing to help save the environment. Like not sending so many cards maybe? They were of course not printed on recycled paper, and the team seemed to give little consideration to who would actually buy them and why. However, they saved the best until the end.

Team leader Kevin decided to pitch the idea himself as he was 150% confident, despite having Claire in his team, whose job was to do exactly that. He left preparing his pitch until they had about 3 hours to go, at which point he sent Claire and another girl (Jenny I think) to start preparing it. With 2 hours to go, as they took him through it, he realised that he didn't have the time to be able to do it well. He tried to back out of it, but Claire and Jenny both told him they weren't prepared to do it at such short notice, so he was stuck with it.

The pitching itself was so cringeworthy, Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant would probably have thought it too OTT for The Office. I can't really describe it, but the best bit was probably when he told Clinton Cards that them not buying any of the green cards was akin to America not signing the Kyoto agreement. emoticon There was also a good moment when Jenny - the main advocate of the green cards - told Clintons that she'd cut down on buying cards in an effort to help save the environment. emoticon

After that first pitch, there was a great scene of Kevin in a taxi with Alex saying that he wasn't worried that Clintons hadn't seemed that keen on the cards, as he still believed they had a great product and it was Clintons job to make things tough for him. Alex sat beside him trying not to laugh.

Surprisingly, one of the suppliers bought 6000 cards, but the other two turned them down, with Clintons commenting that Kevin's presentation had been poor. Not surprisingly, Kevin got fired.

Re: The Apprentice

although Kevin deserved to go because he was an idiot - the theme developing in this seasons Apprentice is that the Project Leader makes a bad decision and the others keep quiet and let them go with it. then in the boardroom, the PM gets all the blame and they get fired, while many people sit quietly in the background keeping safe.

like when none of the girls wanted to do the pitch because they knew that part of the task would take a large part of the blame when in the boardroom

I agree Plimuf. The two women who should have done the pitch are both so irritating. If they died, I'd laugh.

My ideas were:

- 'Kids Day' there's a mother's day, and a father's day, so there could be a kid's day.

- 'Man-love day' - you'd send a card to your man friends who you would date if you were a girl. E.g. Shears would send me a card @@

More Hugh Morris moments last, although if your were an avid follower such as myself you would realise that that was one of their better efforts. Most of them are a waste of space and i think only made it on to the show because they would make good viewing.

Most weeks they make spectacles of themselves. The best one was last year - they had to buy some good English produce and go to France and sell it on a French Market. One team went to Makro and bought a bulk load of cheap cheddar. The other team spent loads of money on good quality sausages which they were going to cook and allow the customer to taste. However, instead of spending £5 on a small gas stove to cook them on, decided to make their own stove by lighting an empty bean tin. When they had loads of these pork sausages left at the end of the day they went into a muslim butcher to see if he wanted to buy them.

When I was a kid and Mothers Day or Fathers Day came along I would always say to my folks "But when is childrens' day?" To which I always got the bog standard answer "Every day is childrens' day". Never washed with me.

Dan Flynn – good left foot, gives the simple pass and doesn’t dwell on it either which is what you need for that position.

I think Gay Day has a better ring to it - thousands of cards would be bought for the banter.

Re: The Apprentice

what I like about this weeks apprentice was that alan suger said he was fed up of them picking on sara and he discounted 75% of what they said about her and that he couldn't believe the fact that Jenny told Clintons she had cut down on buying cards to save the environment. It was so obvious he was saying bring Jenny back and i'll fire her and his right hand man Nick practically confirmed this on the apprecntice you're fired after show but alas for Kevin the project manager it was a case of nice but dim you'r fired.
