Kirby, you should write a book - you've hit several nails on the head. emoticon

Good effort Kirby, but you've let yourself down here. Surely it's Argentina v S&M in WC2006 that you're thinking of? emoticon

Seriously though, good advice.

Re: The 'Slip Thread

Funny story - at work and a 14yr old patient is watching the footy on channel 5. 'Who's playing?' I asked as strange time for a thursday, but as I said it I looked at the score and the letters for the teams were MID and MC - from this I remebered that Man City were playing their away leg in the UEFA cup against the random team that they lost against at home. He replied, 'Middlesborough vs Man City - Middlesborough are a point ahead on aggregate though'.

 emoticon

I couldn't be assed to correct him but thought it was very funny!

That's a Turpin special. I quite like it - gets you on your toes and the blood flowing.

It's genius, Beano take that back!

Right then, despite the friendly banter, we need to start focusing for the start of the season. We know each other well now, with a slight exception to Rory, so there's no reason to be shy. As Cap'n I'd like to ask you all to dwell on the following points for the next day and a bit so they're planted in your mind for the game. You might think these are obvious, but if they are, why are they still big issues we need to sort out? Anyway:

- SHOUT at each other if you're in space. If you're free, shout as loud as you can, over-the-top volume, to make sure you're heard. Not being negative, I've seen a fair few times easy passes that could have been made if the person on the ball had a better idea of where the surrounding team mates are. It's not a mistake, it's just an aspect of our game as a team which we should work on. So, shout!

- ENCOURAGE each other. There's several points around this I'd like to say: encourage your team mates to support each other, for example, Steve and I encouraging the full backs to push on last weekend - it made a positive difference down the wing. If someone makes a mistake, don't point it out, just say nice things and 'not to worry' so people's heads don't drop (which I think is a big issue we've got to work on - dropped heads has a major impact on our team game). Encourage the strikers by supporting them - be available, but help them get into space and if they shoot, gee them up (even if they miss).

- THINK about when your playing. Play with your heart, but think with your mind logically and in a composed manner - look for easy passes.

- PATIENCE - it's a bit excessive to expect a shot after a couple of passes after we've won possession. So it's fine to pass it around a lot, even if it means going back to our end. Brazil once scored a goal after 26 (ish) passes.

- CONFIDENCE. Have confidence in your own ability. If you weren't good enough, you wouldn't be playing. You are good enough. Be confident in each other and we'll bond better as a team. Help build confidence of those you think are feeling a bit down - don't criticise even if you think it's helpful/constructive - leave it til after the game.

Let's go into this season confident, happy and determined. We've got a good squad, good manager and good friendships.

xx

Inspirational words Kirbdog, I especailly like the kisses at the end and the point about patience. We are good enough to keep the ball for sustained periods of time so it's about time we started doing it.

Roll on Saturday....

Bristol City do it before a match. It's not a Turpin original, but it's good that Turpin introduced it. I think it's good that we've got Turpin, Spring and Nath who know what they're doing, rather than reciting exercises they used to do at school.

Because I watch Bristol City regularly? I ripped it off of somebody else - get your facts straight!

My personal fave is the shoulder rolling warm up that always has a reference to the Kirbdawg emoticon

lol, dunno why - it's like you're afraid of me. Maybe that's why you don't shower with us. Dan on the other hand loves being naked with the boys.
