Re: DIVISION TWO THREAD

I think Dave is talking tosh to be honest. If a groundsman deems his pitch unfit to play, then there is no game, end of. Surely its only on matchdays when the groundsman hasn't called it off and the ref is there, that his impartial view is given.

Dave is just bitter about the Woodies 3 Santos 0 game in perfect pitch conditions but with a bit of rain from circa 2005. emoticon

i dont think a league with 7 teams would be good at all. Each team would have only 12 games and if the league started around 6th sept like this year, the season would be over by christmas, barring bad weather obviously

Both an 8 and 7 league would have triple headers playing an extra game against each other. So you'll still get the 20 plus games a season.

Eakes, there is no reason to open up old wounds like that. Especially when some of the players involved on that day have only just recovered from trenchfoot.

Fairly confident I'm not talking tosh though. Had a few chats with people after the Santos GFA debacle this season (match abandoned at half time) which backed this up. It is apparently an FA ruling - the ref can call off the game on the advice of the groundsman, but it is the ref's decision. Obviously it doesn't work so well at our level (and I know that it is the local authority that calls off Downs League games).

My point was that I think we should put a bit more pressure on grounds that call off games at the drop of a hat. If this continues not to work, then teams should start looking for different pitches.

There are loads of leagues that have far bigger divisions than ours that manage to get their matches completed in time. I also don't agree with Crofty's comment at all that we should be different because we're a Churches league. Everybody has weekends where they have other commitments whether they're Christians or not. Eakes had a church weekend a couple of weeks ago. He came back for the match and returned afterwards. emoticon

Re: DIVISION TWO THREAD

Agreed. We should have one league of 23 next season. Play each other once.

But we are different! This is set by the FACT that we play mornings so we can be free to do other things with Family/church in the afternoon, that has always been the statement made to me since I've been in the league (11 yrsish) therefore before we even start thinking about the fact we are a Churches league and are meant to show a difference anyway, the BCFA has already made a statement that we are a league which is different to others by having early kick offs to accomodate other things such as church family and for some younglings other matches.

Therefore you are right when you say you don't agree that we should be different because we ARE different.

For the record Eakes is a BCFA legend whose standards nobody can live up to, so not fair to set him as an example. emoticon

Best example of such self-sacrifice in my memory was when Si Baker went away with his wife to North Wales for a weekend. Except on Saturday morning, he got up at something like 4am and drove back to Patchway to play. He then returned to North Wales afterwards. How romantic!

Either way, I still disagree. I think the issue of whether we can play more games is much more to do with the pitches than anything else. It certainly needn't compromise our ethos as a league. We seem to have more trouble getting all our fixtures in than any other league, and yet we play less games - it doesn't make sense. We need to look at how other leagues manage and see what we can learn.

I agree with this and your right it doesn't make sense, I think this season has been a massive issue with the weather as we should still fit in our games comfortably yet most teams have fixtures beyond the 18th April, last season we fitted in all our games and even had space for two friendlies at the near the end of the season which included a 3-0 win over slip - Oh happy days. The biggest issue with our matches compared to others who KO at 2pmish is that we get the morning weather, therefore we could get Frost snow or a waterlogged pitch which may well be clear and able to play in the afternoon.

Re: DIVISION TWO THREAD

Well our season has just downward spiralled since losing to BS4 in Feb. We haven’t won in 5 and to make things worse we have the champions elect this sat. We should have hammered Israel in both games yet came away with only point. We need to start getting ruthless in front of goal. Not since beating Welton 9-1 have we played that well nor have we finished our chances. Hillfields are in real danger of finishing well down the table and ending the season in midtable. I just hope that we can get some sort of form going into the final.

I think SAS and Sanctuary have officially wrapped up promotion with Gordano and Israel having to hand them the points I don’t think there are enough games left to trouble them. Congratulations to them both. Sanctuary are the real shock for me as they look average in preseason, yet they have made themselves difficult to beat as well as smashing in a load of goals. Credit also has to go to SAS who after we beat them convincingly in January have just gone on an awesome run to still keep their title hopes alive, I thought we had the momentum after beating them but they have proved they are ready for it and that we are far from ready. Kensington have been the late flyers and are pushing for third place. However it is in our hands still to finish third, as we face all of the top 5 bar SAS in the end we will finish third if we beat them all – not likely but we’ll see.

Sad to hear about Israel as they are good enough to hold their own in this league and Gordano who are by far the best team for attitude. It’s a shame the promotion race is over but still 5 or so games for each team to get some momentum ready for next season.
