Eakes, I am not a hotline to Chris Day.

On the subject, I watched Chris and his boys in a bowls match on Saturday afternoon and our favourite referee was majestic. They were winning when I left, I hope they closed it out.

We had an interesting one in our game on Saturday that I got rather animated about (apologies Nath!) but having chatted to JP about it afterwards think the ref got it right.

The SAS player passed the ball forward and our lino flagged for offside. In the meantime though our player handballed the ball. The ref gave SAS a free kick.

I argued that the offside was the first offence so should have been our free kick.

What JP was saying was that because the ball did not arrive at the offside player, he was technically not active so therefore was not offisde.

Your thoughts??

Without looking up the rule and going on instinct, I would have given the offside.

You could say that the attacker is active because the defender has handballed it to stop it going to them.

And I think as a referee, if you weren't sure, the best decision would be to give the offside as it minimses the risk of potential confrontation. For example, if you'd given the free kick for the handball and they had scored from it, you would have had the defender confronting you arguing why you didn't give the offside. If you give the offside in the first place, I don't think the attacking players would argue as much as I don't think they'd know enough about the rules to disagree with you!(not that that stops players anyway!)

My first thought was that it should have been a free kick for offside, which I would have given as a referee, but when I thought about it, I don't think the attacker was technically active as he hadn't received the ball (& can't remember if he was going through on goal, or running back to an onside position) so therefore Cheese handballing it was the first offence, so therefore a free kick for that. If only someone could clear up the offside rule for us.....Christopher..... emoticon

You don't have to receive the ball to become active.

Haven't really seen him that much of late but was not impressed when I watched him in La Liga 2 seasons ago. Thought he was all flahs and no substance really, bit like Ronaldo when he first played for United. I assume he has improved.

Curbs gone from West Ham.

But we'll probably find out tomorrow he hasn't resigned and he wasn't sacked!

Have only just caught up with some of the threads. The first offence was the offside so it would be a free kick to the defence.

And to think that the referee and the SAS captain had the cheek to say aimed at me "You'd think some people would learn the rules at his age". No further questions your honour.

Yeah from what i have seen on him more recenlty looks a corker of a player, will be good to see how he plays in a completly different style league.
