Re: The Champions League thread
United not even close on the night and Barca worthy winners. Rooney was nowhere in the game - he's been great on the flanks recently, but I guess its one thing to be good against Prem opposition and another to be good against Barca. Their midfield was awesome. Really dislike Inesta's attitude as a player, but can't argue with his class at all. Puyol proves himself to be the most poncy centre-half in Europe again (realise he didn't play there on the night), just edging out Vidic. Whatever happened to centre-halves who were embarassed to show pain? Carragher and Ferdinand are all we've got left! Messi's goal was an awesome header - all in the timing of the jump. Perfect.
Either way, was a good game but sadly not great.
Have to say though, it is pretty sad to gloat like that when your team's won nothing this season. Obviously, a lot of Liverpool fans casn claim that they were pleased Man U lost because they're local rivals but you can hardly claim that when you're from Bristol !
Would still like Liverpool to win the Prem though!

Re: The Champions League thread
Dave, I think thats a bit harsh on Rooney. He still put in a couple of decent crosses, problem is they didn't have any strikers in the box. Also he didn't get the ball in many good opportunities. But Barca's midfield was good and Iniesta showed his class, the way he ghosts through gaps is lovely to watch. And you're right, that Messi header had class all over it.
Don't think I have ever seen Carrick give the ball away as much as he did last night. Not sure any Man U player can hold their hand up and say they had a good game.

Re: The Champions League thread
Am gutted but Barca ran the show after 10mins and United had no answer to them, Carrick was very poor yesterday if he was on his game it could have been different but all three centre midders didn't perform and against the best 2 players in that position you know it's going to end in tears think utd missed Fletcher last night and hopefully hargreaves will be fit next year.
Why he didn't have Ronney up front with Ronaldo and giggs on the flanks I don't know Ronaldo is not a striker Rooney is and he would have got on the end of those crosses I hope it will change next year and Rooney will get a more central position.
Must say if Giggs had scored 1 min after Messis goal it could have been very interesting but sometimes as the slip will tell you it just isn't your day to win!

I gloat because they are local rivals (I am from Liverpool after all), I also gloat because they are a team of dislikables.
Ronaldo, Rooney, Ferdinand and Neville, I just loved the look of their faces at the end.

Re: The Champions League thread
Well, for what it's worth i disagree with a lot of what people are saying... United were dreadful, but Barcelona weren't much better.
I honestly believe Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelski (who should've been there anyway) would have done a job on them last night. I don't get all this "Messi rose to the challenge" etc etc... he was average last night although good finish for the goal. But where was Ferdinand! What a joke.
Giggs and Ferguson should retire. Completely passed it and it was clear for all to see last night. Agree with Dave that Rooney wasn't great, but he was their best player last night which says a lot. He has played well on the left flank (not the right). Can't believe Fergies persistance to play Ronaldo in the centre of a three man attack. His position is an attacking right midfielder and should've played on the right with Rooney in the middle and Park on the left. Simple.
Yes, they won the league fair and square, but Liverpool (with Torres and Stevie week in, week out) would've walked it this year and will win it next year.
United = Joke... end of.

Re: The Champions League thread
NJ, were you watching the same game as the rest of us, or are your expectations just sky high following the season SAS have just had?

Not sure that's very fair on Barca. Some of their passing and movement was lovely. They created a fair few chances and scored twice against a team that's had the best defensive record this season in the Prem (I think) and in Europe. They averaged conceding 0.4 goals a game this season in Europe?

Possibly, we'll never know. Just read a BBC journalist saying Barca on last night's evidence are the best team in Europe by some distance. Absolute rubbish when you consider they probably shouldn't have even made the final. I thought Messi played quite well. He always committed 2 or 3 players to him and was difficult to stop even then. Iniesta and Xavi were better on the night though.

Seriously?? Giggs maybe, but not Fergie when he's just won the Prem, Carling Cup, World Cup and Community Shield, finished runner up in the CL and made the semis of the FA Cup????

Ronaldo has played that role a fair few times in the past and usually done quite well there. They played that way against Arsenal in the semi second leg and destroyed them.

Even as a die-hard Liverpool fan, I think that's a silly statement. We'd have been closer, and might have sneaked it, but it would have been very tight. After all, Gerrard and Torres failed to help us score past Stoke at Anfield for starters.

Completely agree.

Re: The Champions League thread
...it was like men against boys!
Davo, what's wrong with Iniesta's attitude?..
..also agree Rooney had a stinker as well as many others, only two good crosses at the beginning of the second half, besides that he just passed backwards!.. I thought he was an attacker!
