"Danger" in the use of CALL
In the first article you read about "Some Pros and Cons" (ICT4LT Module2.2), the author, Davies, writes, "There is a danger, however, of relying too much on the computer's ability to process the learner's input" and then he cites Levy's (1998) words to support this point:
"Where the student is generally working alone without the teacher, the computer has to reliably give the student the right kind of guidance and advice every time the program is used; there is no second wave of feedback that can come with a teacher's presence to act as backup. [...] The success, therefore, of the computer in the tutorial role, hinges on how reliably the program manages the student's learning and on how timely, accurate and appropriate is the feedback, help and advice given." (Levy 1998:90)
Do you agree with this point? Discuss this issue with your group members. Can you further elaborate this "danger" with examples?
Note: Groups 3 and 4 are required to answer this question. Other students' responses are also welcome.

Yes, our group members agree with this point. But in our point of view, we still consider that students can’t work alone without the teacher. Because computer-learning system just can make us know our answer is right or wrong. It can’t explain the real reason why the answer is wrong, so relying on computer system to teach us as a tutor is helpless.
In addition, we also had experience to post our composition into the computer system, we tried to use computer to grade our work. Finally, we are unsatisfied with results. It is very difficult to make sure if computer knows what we want to express, so a good interactive relationship with computer is not easy set up as well. When we finish our essay, it is very important to get feedback from others. Feedback is good for us to know how to improve our essay. Teachers can share appropriate responses with us timely. If we face some difficulties, teachers can help us to solve those problems directly. We can know that computer system still can’t replace the role of the real teacher so far.

Yes, we agree with this point. Since there is no teacher to interact with the students, the computer has to take the job. It is because students are passive when they use computer to learn. Most of time, they do not know what to do in front of computer. All they can do is to click the mouse and follow the instruction the computer give. Therefore, the program has to set an environment and give the students right guidance and advice. In this way, students will not lose when they are learning. Also the accurate feedback should be given as likely as possible at the right time. Don’t let students feel that they are talking to a machine.
I think we all have an experience that we are tend to easily forget things we learned on the computer. It seems that we do not really input those phrase and vocabularies into our brain after the learning. It just stays short time in our memories and can not leave deep impression. It is quite opposite like we learn in real situation. If we get mistakes, we will receive feedback from our classmates and teacher. Maybe we are laughed by classmates and scolded by teachers. That makes us hard to forget the mistakes. But the computer is different and it always repeats the same feedback. That makes students numb about the mistakes
