Writing Activities and Use of Computers

Based on your writing learning experiences, please give examples to illustrate what learning activities your writing teacher(s) designed for each writing process stage. Did s/he used computers or any writing programs (e.g. "My Access" - an online writing development tool) to facilitate your learning of writing? If yes, how? Did you like the computer-assisted learning activities s/he use in the writing class? Why or why not?

Groups 5 & 6 are required to answer this question.

Group 6

Because everyone in our group were in the same writing taught by Aiden last semester and Michael now. So, we think, for the 1.prewriting activities, Aiden used to ask us to do some research on our own by using internet or any material helpful, and Michael give us the background information through the peer to peer and teacher to students discussion. 2.Writing the draft, Aiden and Micheal are pretty the same on this part, we since we are in advanced writing class , we just write it after pix out a idea or frame. 3. Responding, Aiden and Michael adapt the similar approach on this, we students have to give feedback to each other, both critic and acclaim. 4.Revising and editing, we revised it based on the feedback teacher and peers gave. 5.Evaluating, our works are evaluated by both teacher and peers. Aiden used to use My access for evaluating our essay. Developing skill, no idea about this truly. 7. showcasing or publishing work, students’ essay are required to post on Nicenet. And Aiden even build up a web site which is the so-call web magazine that public things we wrote related to a different top created in the site.
We think Computer-assisted writing is so useful to us that we can complete the process of writing a good essay easily at home or wherever a pc is available. I Like it particularly because we can do the peer feed back with a user-friendly software that assist and facilitate the process and motivation of giving feedback. It’s quite interesting for us to give feedback in such way. Also, now students are getting more and more familiar with using a PC on writing or any other work, therefore, to learn anything by net is a quite well approach to advocate.

Re: Writing Activities and Use of Computers By Group

Dear classmates,

We are group 5. Louise, Sam, Joanne, Janet, Christian.

The writing program concerning CALL that we’ve used are “Nicenet” and “My Access.” The similarity between them is that both of them allow students to post journal and assignment on the internet. However, the differences between them are that one provides resources, one does not. For example, “My Access” provides resources such as “Tutor,” it is to examine students’ writing and give instructions for revising their writing posted. In addition, it can also grade students’ writing as well as gives feedback on their writing. Before writing, students can click on instruction for starting writing. And this also can be found on “My Access.” On the contrary, “Nicenet” doesn’t provide these functions which are mentioned above. Students can only post journals or comments on it. There is no resource provided by the net, only if the teacher or students provide the resources on the net. For example, if teachers find some useful or interesting websites, they post the link on the net. Therefore, students can click on these links to get the resources.

Compare to “My Access,” we prefer “Nicenet” most for the following reasons. Even though “My Access” provides lots of resources which we can easily obtain, it has weak function on its grading system. And we’d like to start our complaining. The grading system really drives us crazy. The computer always gives the same score no matter how many times we submit our writing. Why? And every time we revised my writing, the computer just gives us the same feedback. Those feedbacks don’t answer our question where we did wrong on our writings. During the semester using “My Access,” our instructor of advanced writing class told the class that she doesn’t like this net either. And the whole class didn’t like it too. Later, we found that this grading system favor some certain patterns of writing. That means if you follow this pattern you will get highest score. For example, if the usage of word or the organizational pattern is favored by the computer, he/she can get higher score. Because of this score system, I always get frustrated and lost my confidence on writing.

Although “Nicenet” doesn’t have as many resources or functions as “My Access” do, it promotes students to participate in the writing activity. Every student in the class can share opinion and information on the internet. There is no grading system that bolg students’ interest in writing. According to Krashen’s hypothesis theory, students learn fast and more when the affective filter is lower. Therefore, we think “Nicenet” is a better writing activity for students to improve their writing.
