hoorah! i'm running lunix again.
spent yesterday wrestling with debian and after 12 hours couldn't get X/gdm working so i said ****it. 2 hours later i was up and running in ubuntu. now, i have to admit that i feel like a total pecker-puffer for having ubuntu, but it was damn easy to install&tweak.

already added a couple plugins for firefox and installed a ton of vid drivers this morning. (had to get up at 445 to take a friend to the airport, might as well be productive as long as i'm awake...)
next up- tweaking the office software! >:E

There are days I miss linux. It was so much fun to have a computer that I could actually manipulate, and learn something from.

However, I love games entirely too much to set up my sole system in anything but Windows XP.

I asked for a cheap laptop for christmas. If I get what I asked for, then maybe I'll jump back on the slackware wagon.

I've tried ubuntu via live CD, and it is very nice. It's got a real browser (FF), and even comes with open office. I've thought about switching over, but I'd have to adjust my music collection first. So has ubuntu been pretty stable for you?

If these linux O/S don't handle the variety of games out there, then I personally would stay away. What's the feedback on gaming and Linux?

Gaming requires serious tweaking in order to get anything to work correctly in linux. Imagine installing the drivers for your video card by hand, without the joys of a wizard to automatically guide files to appropriate locations.

Sadly, very few games "just work" in linux, most require a heavy bit of tweaking, or even emulation, to function correctly. This is why my home gaming system will never run linux ((unless this ever changes)).

However, a ultility/office notebook would definitely work well for me on a linux platform.
