Anti-Virus
Wondering what u peeps are using for anti-virus. I've got Norton on two of my puters and just installed AVG on another. I've used Norton for years. This is my first time trying AVG. Can't beat the price (free!), but wondering how well it works.

Re: Anti-Virus
Been using AVG for a couple of years... the free version and never had a problem. I "had" Norton and I think it's very bloated... takes up my system resources and I could not un-install it! Plus, u not only have to buy it but u have to pay them yearly.
My main arsenal for net security these days:
- AVG
- Sygate Personal Firewall
- Spyware Blaster
- Spybot S&D
all of the above are free. Of course, every1 should have a router too.

Re: Anti-Virus
i'm with foo on the anti-norton campaign. it's even more bloated than mcafee (which i use) and it's literally impossible to uninstall any of their junk without seriously destabilizing your system. hardly worth the trouble.
i've heard only good things about avg.

Re: Anti-Virus
heh, I've never owned an AV proggie. I used one that came with my school's internet package, but I uninstalled it cause it slows the system down.
My theory for AV is this, you are still succeptable to the newest attacks, since cures can't be found until after someone gets an infection. Also, AV proggies lag the crap out of your system, as they hog so many resources. The AV proggie at work frustrates me quite a bit, since I have no control over it. At times my machine dips to unusable levels.
So if I don't use AV, what do I do to protect my machine? Well, first of all, avoid both IE and OE at all costs. These 2 programs are the number 1 and 2 targets for virus, and they aren't very secure. Not to say other browsers and email clients are problem free, but they are still much better than IE and OE. For email, I use webmail. What I like about webmail accounts (yahoo, etc) is that they have up to date virus scanners that scan all attachments sent to you. Also, messages don't have a direct route to your machine. Also, any suspicious emails can always be opened on another machine. Lastly, I use a firewall, even behind a router, and I visit windows update when I need to.
In the end, I'm pretty prepared to format and reinstall windows as a last resort. All important stuff is backed up or can be reinstalled. Besides, reformatting can be a nice healthy thing for the good ol' C: drive.

1 key thing Sq mentions... BACKUP.
The fact is, most mom & pop users, and I'd even guess over 95% of computer users don't backup their important data. Thus, when a virus hits, we're all SOL. THat 95% doesn't count the hundreds upon thousands of corporate pcs on a company LAN where the IT guys do backups every nite... still, the peeps who save their important data on their local HD... they're still fuct when the latest worm/virus attacks em and they ignored Mr.Geek to tell them to update their virus tables.
Yes I backup, and do ghost images of my C drive, etc... and still use AVG and these spyware blockers... I guess u can say I like to minimize any potential hacks.... heck, I'm too busy tryin to play games

Hard drives are mechanical devices, so they eventually die. No one knows when that will be, and to have 120GB of data loss can really suck.
I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but for the benefit to every1 who reads this, it's worth beating....
A Tech. here at my work LOST all of his honeymooon pics he had saved on his hard drive just months after he came back.... he didn't even get a chance to u/l it to a photo service to get prints yet.... I felt bad for him, but at the same time I couldn't believe a PC "Tech" had no systematic way of backing up his files.
