Time to build a new PC
Well guys I've completely fried my simple mind reading reviews and specs. at newegg.
Here's what I have in mind for a new system
AMD 64-4000+ San Diego, I think???
MOBO ????, non SLI, 2 GB PC3200, low Latency
Video, 6800GT
DVD/CD Burner ????
Case, power supply, network card, Etc.
I am not any good at tweaking the Bios. Whatever I buy needs to load and run with as little input from me as possible, lol.
Squirrel, Foo, anybody??
recomendations!!!!

Re: Time to build a new PC
I say go less on the CPU, and more on the video card. Most of today's games are limited by the video card, as even a fairly average CPU can do the job. IMO, a 3200+ or 3500+ paired with a 7800GT or 7800GTX will do a much better job. If you ever become brave enought overclock, you will have good results with the above CPUs. It's really not that hard, and the results are very good usually.
For your mobo, get an NF4-based board, either Abit or Asus. The passively cooled boards are more expensive, but well worth it.

Re: Time to build a new PC
Superdave.... what's your budget??? Some l33t gamers will spend $1,500.00 on the latest and greatest, but even $500 can go a long way.
I think $200 alone on the vid card alone is about where u should be... then go from there.

Re: Time to build a new PC
Well it's done, almost....
AMD 64 X2, 4200 dual core
Winfast NF4K8AC mobo
2 Gb PC-3200, Cs 2.5
Using a loaner MSI 6800 vid
until the 7800GT comes in.
250 Gb HD
16x lite-on DVD burner
As you can see, I went with a small, local
computer builder for the components. I agree
that Newegg or others are cheaper, but I kinda need the close at hand support of a brick & mortar store. My cost is probably
10-15 % above the online retailers but thats okay with me.
So far so good, only 1 major screw up.
Win XP Pro...can't get the registration
on my new hard drive. I started from scratch
on the build and loaded XP as opposed to
using the old HD. Now I have a registration problem that may take $150 to solve, lol.
Or at least a conversation with uncle Bill
to get it working properly.
More later
PS, with stock settings Q2 timedemo
demo1.dm2=620
in game timerefresh was 1200+

Re: Time to build a new PC
Hehe, thanks Squirrel, had a call to MS on my to do list. No hacks or cracks here. I quit the world of Warez long ago when the
world of "the nasty virus" came into play.
Called MS this AM and got it registered with no problems, quite painless actually.
System is running good. Going to a dual core processor is kinda risky for a gamer but it seems the game creators are going to take advantage of the technology quite soon.
The 64 bit version of HL2 is out as we speak. So hopefully this will last 3-4 years
before technology makes it a dinosaur again.
How do the new flat screens compare performance wise compared to my 19" CRT?
I'm thinking about a 21" widescreen for the new rig.

Re: Time to build a new PC
shoot, i saw an ad for an LCD recently boasting 3ms latency. 3ms!
i'm not big on the whole wide-screen thing. they're great for (most) dvd's, but generally a nightmare for gaming from what i've seen.

Re: Time to build a new PC
I've been pretty successfull getting widescreen to work. HL2 supports it natively, while the quake/doom series just requires some config tweaks. Some games have no support at all, leaving black boxes on the sides of the screen.
