Update Video Drivers??

How often is it "necessary" to update ur video drivers? Reason I ask... Steam, which is sortof the "front-end" client that manages all of the HL/HL2/CS/CSS games, gives me a message "Video Drivers should be updated" and it refers me to ATI's driver page. I can still run the games... I'm just one of those who keeps the old drivers till something goes out of whack.

So, if everything is runnin fine on the system, is it a good idea to update the video drivers? If so... do I have to un-install the older Radeon drivers prior to installing new ones?

Man....if you do update, keep a copy of your old ones just in case. I updated my nVidia dirvers and deleted the old ones....Needless to say the new ones were .... um.....junk. And then for some reason, I think it has to do with my java security settings but I havent figured it out yet, I can no longer dl anything off the nVidia site. So I had to have a clan mate dl em for me and put em on his ftp for me to grab.

Foo, you shouldn't need to uninstall. That would only be necessary if you were switching to an nVidia card. Generally, updating to newer drivers doesn't hurt, though I guess everyone runs into exceptions. Give it a shot, if it doesn't work, you can always go back to the older ones.

That's what HL is doing to me Foo, BUT, it won't let me run the game. I dunno if it's related to that or some other problem?

Maybe Steam is screwed up? It could start getting hacked for its anti-piracy approach...

Hugo... now this is weird....
I've been playin CSS mostly this past week... so I haven't tried HL2 multiplayer until I saw ur post.... well guess what????? HL2 Multiplayer doesn't run for me! I get an odd memory error which I've gotten before, but it was only once in a while.
Meanwhile...

- I can still play CSS
- HL2 Single player runs

and I did updates:
- Latest ATI Catalyst
- Latest Audigy2 drivers

and I even clocked back and not doing any oveclocking... still the same ole sh-t. I need sleep now so I shall look into this further.

ok.... so DOOM3 and HalfLife2 Multiplayer are both NOT running... so if it's 2 totally different games not running, can I safely say it's the RAM???? I can't say it's a Steam/Source problem especially with all the angry users I'm reading about who can't run any of the Steam apps... seems I'm in a very off boat.

When I have the time, my next step will be to fiddle with the ram... seems like I'm exhausting nearly all of the software/tweak options.

Foo, I doubt your RAM is going bad. RAM has a lifetime warranty, so it seems unlikely that it's defective. If you find this is the case, however, make good on your warranty! I'm pretty sure I sent you all the packaging and papers with it when you bought it.

Foo, as for the problem I am having, with it just not doing anything, I got an email from support saying that I need to install the latest directx ver 9.03c or something like that. I haven't done it yet, but I clicked on the game just to see what would happen since there was some kind of update today and it now gives a message saying the same thing, about needing to update directx. So, I guess I'll try that later on. I'll let you know what I find.

Hugo, I checked on the lastest DX9 which I do have.

Sq... I ran the famous Memtest86 for 10 passes... took about 4 hrs last nite and not a single error. So, as some1 as experienced u are on PC forums, does this pretty much rule out my RAM as the problem?

methinks 2 things left to do:
- disable the Audigy2 SB card
- re-install the Win2k.

If u have any other ideas, lemme know. I read the soundcard remedy in one of the numerous threads... that card was already acting flaky even in Q2... remember how I'd complain about my sound droppin out during fragfests? I'd get weird pops too.
