Well, to be honest, my second run through HL2 has not been as smooth, which is quite odd, since I have my 3000+ CPU overclocked to 2.25ghz (1.8ghz stock). One would expect performance to increase, but it hasn't. I'm not sure if I had my SB Live installed the first time through or not, so I don't know if that is causing the slow downs (I do have 4.1 sound enabled this time). However, I did notice that about 2 weeks ago, Steam updated both itself and HL2, so perhaps these new program changes aren't for the better? meh 
Anyway, I still think your RAM is fine, foo. It typically doesn't fail, but I guess it could happen. More than likely, the motherboard or video card will die, since they are the most complex components in the system. Do you have a different video card you could use to test this theory?

Finally downloaded directx 9.0c. I can now access HL2 again, both online and off. What a pain. I hate getting a new version of something like that unless it's absolutely necessary. Always afraid it's going to screw up something on my system.

I'm glad it worked out Hugo. I've been on DirectX 9.0c for quite some time, so that's not my problem.
I think I've done everything software/drive/settings wise to no avail. So I think my last choices are:
- switch ram into different slots,
- re-install Win2k.

ANyone going to look me up for some HL2 battles? I've played it a few times, but it's just not the same on my own. It's much better to crowbar someone I know.
