What RAM to get?
Squirrel,
For your Soltek SL-NV400-64 mobo which is my main gaming rig... what would u suggest if I were to buy 1GB ram for this?
I got a couple of "cannot read memory" errors in different proggies... and now Doom3 does not even run. Everything else seems to be runnin.

Anyway, if upgrading you must go, I just bought a matched pair of Corsair XMS PC3200 modules. The cost $115 when I bought them,
Sq, is this the same RAM???
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145449
it's goin for $113 after $10 mail in rebate.
Ya, upon further investigation... the errors I was getting may not be RAM related... actually, I need to check again to see if D3 can run! LOL!

Re: What RAM to get?
Sq, I'm tooo lazy to start a new thread... but as I am looking to upgrade in "piece-meal" from now until 3/2006, I drive myself wacko juggling the options....
u know what mobo and cpu I have now... what's the ideal CPU/MOBO combination for $200.00 or marginally more? With new 1GB ram, I am wondering it a $300-$350 upgrade makes sense now: RAM+MOBO+CPU all for $350.00. Perhaps this will better complement my 9800PRO for now and I can up it to a 6800GT in March.
My dilemma is... is it too much to ask for a "noticeable" difference in gameplay by spending this much?

Re: What RAM to get?
I guess it all depends of IF you want to upgrade the entire system soon or not. You are at a bit of a crossroads, since you don't want to change boards without changing to PCI express as well. I'd hate to see you spend $250 on something with an AGP slot, because AGP is going away. Currently, there is exactly ONE motherboard that has both an AGP slot, and a PCIe slot. It's a semi-budget board, but it's your best choice if you intend to buy a new board, RAM, and CPU right now but wish to retain your 9800pro until March.
If I 'egg it, I can get this combo:
Foxconn AGP/PCIe motherboard - $69
A64 3200+ Venice - $152 (you got lucky here, as the price just dropped)
Corsair XMS 1GB (512mb x 2) - $119 (I own the exact same RAM)
Total with shipping = $343.99
Not bad if I do say so myself.
The above combo will work great, the venice core cpu will OC like mad (my 1.8ghz model is currently running at 2.4ghz), and you can use your 9800pro today, yet upgrade to a PCIe card tomorrow. I don't know much about the Foxconn board, except that Asus makes them. That's your research project. However, I see it as the ONLY current choice that's feasible. Buying a S939 motherboard with an AGP slot would be very very very very very stupid, as you handcuff yourself for future upgrades.
