Windows XP X64?
So am I to assume that I should run Windows XP X64 when I eventually upgrade to an Athlon 64 CPU?

You have assumed incorrectly. Software and driver support for XP64 is pretty sad. To be honest, I'm not sure when 64bit stuff will take off. It is very useful for servers, but not much else. Just use good ol' 32bit windows.

That's what I'm reading too Sq. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing the boat. You figure an "64 bit optimized" O/S would the be right thing, but I guess we have a long way to go.
I'll milk my Win2k for as long as I can and as long as Uncle Bill keeps up with the updates/patches.

Which motherboard/socket are you looking at foo. If it is a 939 I would consider selling you my 3000 Athlon 64 Winchester core. I researched the winchester and it is supposedly better on controlling heat. On my computer it has proven the claims true.

Hammer thx for the offer but I may be getting upgrades as holiday gifts.... prolly an Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1Ghz. At least it ended up on a wish list, we shall see.
So may I ask Hammer, if u part with that 3000, what would u replace it with?

I checked foo, apparently I had forgotten, mine is a 3200. Oh if I sell it I am going to take a shot at on of the socket 939 FX series.
