computer prob
My ma just recently retired and is bored as heck... She likes card games-solitaire..poker.. puzzle games. So i told her I had an older computer I could set up for her... It's one I put together a few years back... asus m/b,1024 ram- voodoo 3 card.. I cant remember but I upgraded at the time and I think it ran fine when I put it away... Now I get nothing.. I hit the power switch and nothing... I think it might be the power supply but unfortunatly i don't have another one to try..
What would be my first move here... I checked all the wires, everything seems fine... If anyone has any ideas let me know before I spend money on something I don't need.. Thanx guys

Re: computer prob
Hmmm, tough call if you don't get anything. If you don't even get a post up screen with a bios message, etc. and I'm assuming the fans don't move and hard drive doesn't start to spin.... you unfortunately need to begin with the Powersupply.
Since it's an older PC, you don't need a high powered one and I think Compusa or Frys prolly has a 300-350 watt P/S for $50 or less I am guessing. If you don't want to shell out the bucks, then bring your PC over, yank out your P/S and try that.
But even before you try that, I hope you've done the obvious and check the power/supply cable connected to the motherboard. And since most power supplies have a "snake" of connections... try a different one.
To take this to another level... do you have a multi-meter that checks voltage levels? Borrow one from an electrician buddy. If you already have one, then you should know what to do. If not, forget about it cause I am a geek.
Anyway, I hope this steers you in some direction.
.... wow, did you say Voodoo card????

Re: computer prob
Actually all you have to do is get a volt ohm meter, put it on DC, connect it into one of the output plugs and if you are not getting any voltage it is the power supply.

Re: computer prob
if the power source is really dead then none of the LEDs on the mobo should light when it's plugged in.
make sure everything is plugged in though, and that the switch is "on"... just in case hard to imagine life without an extra power source or two sitting around somewhere.
if your LEDs light but it won't boot at all, it's more likely that either something's come loose (vidcard? ram?) or your mobo (or maybe cpu - knew someone who had one corrode into a pile of green rust when left unatended for a while) has died.

Re: computer prob
I'm glad I read this. I was heading to the computer store to get a new p/s today...
The LEDs do light up.. But thats all I get. I cant even open the cd rom drive..
I guess i'll take it all apart and clean it up and see if that helps..
Thanx guys

Re: computer prob
If you haven't already, try clearing the CMOS. Sometimes the BIOS gets corrupt after a long time, and sometimes that will fix it. If not, I'd suspect the power supply first, the motherboard second, and the video card third. The video card would make me wonder more if it wasn't a V3--those things live forever! Power supplies like to die at random, and some of the older motherboards out there can have capacitor failures over time. CPUs just don't go down, and RAM typically lasts forever as well.

Well I changed the p/s and everything started out ok but now I get this.
self test b
your monitor is working g
check the video cable and pc r
I'm afraid my old voodoo3 took a dump
I had another but gave it to my bud cavedweller a few months back so he could play q2 again. Gonna be tuff to get it back.
I'm afraid im gonna have a new computer by the time I figure it out.
I just bought a boat. At this point it might be a better boat anchor than a pc..
