Windows Vista Thread
I figured it'd be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to Windows Vista since some of us will have firsthand experiences. And most importantly, we want to know firsthand experiences on how or IF our old games will work on Vista.
I stumbled across Vista at Bestbuy and saw there's a variety of flavors of Vista... "home" or basic type versions starting $100-$150 price range. I am wondering if these stripped down versions are a waste of money.
The million dollar question is, do any of us have a real good reason as to why we need Vista now?

Re: Windows Vista Thread
Well, you can save a good deal of cash by getting an OEM version from newegg. The only things the OEM version lacks is pretty packaging and support from MS (who calls MS for problems, anyway?).
I used Vista RC2 for several months and loved it. I went back to XPpro a little while back since RC2 expires next month. Didn't want to leave myself with an unusable OS. However, my friend at work has a sister-in-law that works for MS, so I'm bugging him to ask her to buy a few copies with her hefty discount. I wouldn't mind Vista Ultimate for a ridiculously low price. If that doesn't pan out, I may just order Home Premium one of these days.
As for games, they will play a little slower since Vista graphics drivers still need a little polish. However, I played through FEAR on my Vista install with few problems.
Did I mention my new neighbor has an XB360 and lets me borrow any game I want? He has pretty much all of them, and right now I'm playing Gears of War for free. Now that is one sweet looking game, especially for a console!

Re: Windows Vista Thread
Was in the same boat as rodent did rc2 but went back to xp. Waiting for better driver support before I go Vista. I might pick it up in a month or two. After I get a 8800 vid card.

Cool... I can't wait to hear a report on how Q2 runs on Vista... and if u still have Half-Life 2, load it up and lemme know if that game runs.

Re: Windows Vista Thread
Well, when I ran RC2, games were a little slower. The main problem is that Vista has DX10, which is heavily changed from DX9. As a consequence, driver support isn't quite there yet when it comes to games. Q2 will run well enough, I'm sure, but if your system struggled with HL2 before on XP, it won't be playable on Vista.
