The kewlest looking crutch...
For my recent birthday (Sept 17), I went out on a mission to replace the noisy old HD in my backup machine with something a little more modern. My 10gb Maxtor from 5 years ago was still churning, but I got tired of the noise. Anyway, in my search, I came across the Antec super LANboy. It looked kewl so I bought it (hey, it's my birthday). It was yet another floor demo, so I got them to take $15 off the price. The scratches on back aren't that noticable, especially since that side faces the wall.
The system specs are hilarious. K62 500mhz, GF2 MX 400, and 128mb of PC100. The 4x CDROM was getting pretty worn out, so I chose to omit it from the design. However, it has a nice new 40gb 7200rpm Maxtor, which helps it load Win2k a bit faster. Since the old socket 7 board was built before integrated sound, I picked up a SB Live! Digital for $35 at a local shop.
This machine serves a few purposes: File backup (always need that, especially for a notebook), MP3 playing (a new duty, thanks to the SB Live card), Internet Gateway (56k controller modem over a 802.11g card), possibly playing Quake2 full time (some of the custom maps really drag on it), oh, and now as decor in my room.

Re: The kewlest looking crutch...
I likey Antec cases... did the neon lights and such come w/that case? HD noise can be annoying.
My Antec Black Sonata case has rubber noise cushion thingies that dampen some of the noise caused by the fans and the hard drive... they also sell the case with one of their silent Power Supplies... I luv a silent a PC.

Re: The kewlest looking crutch...
The big one on the case came with. It's a 120mm monster. It came with 2, in fact. The other one just doesn't have lights (not sure why). Both are low speed, so they are relatively quiet. The 80mm one on the CPU I had to purchase. It was a whopping $10 at CompUSA. I'm thinking of going with a red cathode light across the bottom, that should mix well with the blue.
Yes, this one has special HD trays. You mount the drives to the BOTTOM, and it sits on rubber washers, so no vibrations get transfered through. Not really a big deal with Maxtors, since they are very quiet already. All in all, the system doesn't make that much noise, but for obvious reasons, I turn it off at night.
